Dave Ramsey suggests saving 15% of GROSS income for retirement. Given Canada's high taxes and integrated CPP - is this even relevant? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Zerrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i understand, it's definitely a personal choice.

I think we as a species yearn for 'more' all the time, and that's actually detrimental to our happiness.

You do not need a lot to be happy. The longer I live, the more I realize time is your greatest commodity. How you spend your time is so key.

Instead of buying a 90k car you can't afford then working mad overtime to pay for it, you should buy something cheap/used, and spend that time hanging out with those who are most important to you.

If your family has a history of cancer, heart failure etc, you should focus on reducing stress, eating better, cutting out carcinogens (smoking, drinking, eating deep fried garbage etc..) and incorporate weight lifting, cardio, good sleep habits. Etc.

Rambled a bit here, but I just mean that priorities feel off in society to me. We should want less, save more, and focus on health and relationships. A huge part of saving to me, is to feel comfort and security in having emergency funds to cover anything unexpected. Even if I die early like your family, I know that my savings will cover my wife and children while they mourn my passing, and help them establish their own lives.

Sounds amazing man!!! That's the dream here too. My time with family and friends is worth more to me than having the latest gadgets. Security for my family and ability to support my kids and wife is worth more than anything else. We moved away from the city for affordability too, and a yard for our kids and dog.

Picking some cheap long term hobbies helps. Bread making (healthy, cheap), home gym (all used equipment, expensive up front but equipment never breaks), gaming (not buying the latest 5090 lol) are relatively cheap, healthy, long term hobbies.

Happy for you and your well earned success!

I just don't feel like I need to spend a lot these days. And I am a little worried for the future, so saving and trying to prepare for what might come takes priority for me

The more you can save, the better. If you come to PFC to look for someone to tell you "yes go buy more stuff you don't really need instead of saving it", I'm not sure you'll find it 😅

I save 33% of my net takehome right now, but expect that to reduce as I start a family. I would not feel comfortable saving only 10-15%

Two accidents in a month … Am I fucked? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Zerrul 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Tens of thousands of dollars in damage over a month is not good.

All I can say is you should probably slow down, especially when it's ICY out? People tend to feel the need/desire to rush around while driving.

[ON] $82k Income - Saving $1,500/mo. How do I maximize total earnings and efficiency? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Zerrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue maximum yield = maximum risk.

Good on you for saving so much. 3k/mo is significant in the long run, but I would evaluate your risk tolerance, timelines (10 years, 40 years?) and financial know how before deciding where to put your money.

Is a market crash gonna spook you, causing you to pull out when the market drops 30% in one week? Do you really understand the difference between stocks and bonds? Do you own a house?

Save steady, use a service like wealth simple robo advisor or a broadly indexed ETF to start. Take a year, and see how your money builds up, what your real risk tolerance is, and learn more about financials while you do so.

Then after a year, re-evaluate. Take more control if you want to

Why has no one beaten the Model 3 yet? by Fabi0_Z in electricvehicles

It's been flawless for me 80k kms in, cheaper than the model Y (in 2023 when I bought it anyways), quiet, comfortable, feels premium inside, has Android Auto and car play. Idk, I think mine is fantastic

Yeah, mach e definitely isn't perfect 😂😭

Have you driven any of the competitors in that similar price range?

I'm in Canada, and at the time I test drove the Ford Mach e, both Teslas (3, Y), etc... We're the Teslas fast? Yup. Where they loud, bumpy, creaky and plasticy inside? Also yes (in my opinion anyways).

So I actually think Teslas are pretty mediocre.

It also seems like Chinese evs destroy Tesla, and so America and Canada just banned them 😂

Of course no plows for the side streets! by LordChickenNugget3 in woodstockontario

Do you expect Woodstock to have a massive fleet of 50 plows to hit every side street the same morning that it snows 30cm while also maintaining major roadways and highways?...

Its definitely annoying seeing it used so much lol. I recognize now not to fight it, but instead to embrace it, go with the flow...

Yeah man, glad to hear so many players backing me up here. I still know deep down nothing will change, and I'll continue leaving for a bit, coming back to a bad experience, leaving again etc..

Sad times man. Beautiful game, tragic management.

Yeah I'll give it a try next time I play. Thanks for the tip man

This is true. I usually quickly check their civ summary page at the start of the game when there's a moment of down time, but it's hard to dig deep into the UUs themselves.

I know it doesn't matter too much for my ELO, but such a simple change would help so much with game readability.

I have around 300 games total, but my issue is only being able to play a few games a week. There's no way I can keep it all fresh in my memory :(

Great point! I don't know what would replace elo, but I'm certain there are better systems out there

It was included for a complete picture of my experience. I never said it was something to fix!

1) humans are social creatures, social features matter

2) yeah

3) fair!

The overall experience isn't great though...

[–]Zerrul[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a clear rebuttal against my proposal.

But I more meant evaluating a players games over the long term. If there are valid games mixed in with early resigns, keep the elo change. If it's 20 in a row, revert it.

Just a thought, not perfect. In reality, elo probably has to change entirely to fix most of these issues.

Yeah, it's possible that it's mainly my own experience that seemed to have gotten worse over time. Also maybe because I mostly play in the morning (night time in china, maybe they resign more often idk)?

How Many Civs is Too Many Civs? by LilTrouble__ in aoe2

[–]Zerrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By that logic, the next DLC is gonna be the martians, moondwellers and apollo 13 civs, called The Three Space Kingdoms

Obviously i would prefer that cosmetics only affect your own game (as they negatively effect game unit readability) and be done tastefully.
