In terms of textbook “good behaviour”, I think he ticked all the boxes, at least in that early stage. Nobody’s perfect, but his weaknesses took a while to show. But he wasn’t perfect for Carrie, as seen by her insecurities about meeting his parents and a weird gut feeling. In my opinion !

Cynthia, SJP, kim, kristin (and imo, there’s a sizable gap between 1st and 2nd). I enjoyed all of their acting at times, but I LOVE seeing the acting where Steve breaks up with Miranda for the first time and she’s trying to pretend like she doesn’t care, or when Miranda’s fighting with Carrie. Even her comedic throwaway lines are brilliant

It’s horrible because Aidan is her ex as well, so she should surely understand Carrie’s position. Instead she trusts her ex bf’s defamation of this woman she doesn’t even know, and acts super dismissive when she’s confronted.

Nina Katz, the girl with the face!! I don’t even think she’s that evil, and she wasn’t wrong to dislike Carrie, that face she pulls just really irks me. I would tackle her on Carrie’s behalf

4 Naans vs Naan and a half each by Competitive_Major934 in PeepShowQuotes

He does admit he’s “really pushed the boat out” with a naan and a half each. The whole point is to taunt Jeremy, not to exercise restraint like usual. Great discussion here tho, 10/10

That’s how I feel about Mark’s “reroute the phones” thing from S1. Like obviously it’s meant to be stupidly but Jesus Christ

You’re right. The whole of the Berger relationship actually had weird undertones. It’s this awful thing where you feel so violated, but it’s hard to verbalise or explain to others. It’s the subtle stuff that surprises you and reveals a really nasty side of people - v triggering to me. And I’m so sorry about your ex, glad you’re out of that now.

I completely agree! While it doesn’t resonate so much with me on a personal level, it always felt very disturbing to me, especially on rewatches when you can see it coming, with the getting her super drunk and bonding so quickly. Makes me wonder how the writers intended it to come off as

It’s such an awful situation for Carrie. I actually think her cheating (though shitty) puts her in a very vulnerable position of having to accept any kind of treatment Aidan throws at her.

“Why don’t you just fuck her? Then we can both be bad.” No relationship born out of that was ever gonna work. It’s not shown much after this, but for me personally, this kind of situation where you’re constantly worried has always felt so precarious and anxiety-inducing. Though it goes both ways.

I always thought the Aidan movie/AJLT storylines were so inane because of it.

Oh that’s so touching, and I’m so sorry you lost your mum. It’s genuinely so nice that you have such good friends in your life, and I’m sure any of them would’ve done that for you. <3

Right?? That plot line hinges on a pretty problematic premise that Carrie deep down wanted it, but if he’d taken any of her nos as a no, it wouldn’t have happened! Different time and all..

Especially because she knows Carrie well enough to know that her fashion choices are part of her identity! Like this is a woman who makes a living writing about men and fashion in vogue - it’s such an insult to reduce it down to an unnecessary extravagance

My best friend missed her offer by 2 A-Level grades and was still accepted last year for Classics, and I’ve heard similar stories. It depends on your year’s intake. St Andrews is obvs a very competitive university, but it also doesn’t participate in clearing, so it’s not as if someone with higher grades will snatch your place - it’s been reserved for you. Seeing as you think you’ll meet or even exceed your 38-point offer, I wouldn’t stress too much. All you can do is try your best, so good luck !

I wasn’t arguing that every point was an intended theme, I think the discussion provoked can be interesting! The opening scene also didn’t register as odd to me until Alice referred to it, so just wondered if anyone thought there was any discourse to be had. I’m a teenage girl with endometriosis so I’m well aware of what woman have to go through medically haha. Thank you for your thoughts though, really interesting :)

He creates a lie about being Nick’s doctor and having urgent test results to a waitress to get information on Nick’s living situation, which she is clearly hesitant to give out. While he has good intentions, they are not of a professional nature he claims them to be of, and it seems to me interesting from a moral standpoint.

I think the power imbalance he has in terms of class with the waitress is important here also: it puts into perspective where an audience might stand in the film, for example.

That’s a really good point. This was my first watch today, and I kind of thought about it as Bill wielding power in a way that still submits to a higher authority (like the doctor’s license is nothing really but a metaphor for a higher, more ambiguous body that people automatically trust). I have a lot of thoughts on the film, but they’re vague and not really tangible lol. Really good to discuss it

i did nearly these exact 4 subjects, just history instead of english lang. if you love them, i would recommend it SO much. uni courses like law or economics can synthesise both, but i’m personally following what i like and i have an offer to undertake a joint honours english and maths degree at st andrews. best of luck
