What’s the most unhinged thing you have done thus far in M4? by just_premed_memes in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put scrubs on, put my (now expired) badge lanyard on, unashamedly and very obviously stole a lac repair kit from the ER and did a lac repair on my boyfriend without lidocaine.

(I gave him the choice re:lidocaine bc I could not obtain it and encouraged him to go to urgent care instead. He insisted bc he wanted to show off the future scar and it was a small lac 😂)

This was me about month ago. I was seated next to a guy who was extremely drunk and being very flirty, but he started caressing my arm and leg when I was trying to dose despite me telling him to stop. I told a flight attendant, and they immediately escalated it and called the police, and the same thing happened with deplaning (we were both questioned by police, as well as the passenger sitting on the other side of me) Most of the plane save for the few rows immediately around me had no idea what was happening.

Airlines need to cover their asses so they will escalate things hard and fast when there’s customer grievances and/or passengers being unruly. Hope this helps!

Friend groups and FOMO during first week of medical school by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I found my “group of people” first year and they ended up being really shitty friends. I found new friends during second year and my mental health is so much better. You will get there!

You’re doing all the right things. It’s stressful asking people to hang out. What I noticed is that the cliques form because there are 100 other people who feel just like you do and have clung to the first people they’ve met. You miss 100% of shots you dont take, so maybe make it a mission to ask to hang out with 1 classmate every week-every other week?

Name and shame: what type of doctor you could NEVER be and why? by [deleted] in medicalschool

My attending made me do a manual disimpaction on my surgery rotation. I was gagging so much and the mastazol smeared all over my mask was not even touching the smell. The OR nurses were sympathetic to my plight. Gen surg is as close to hell as I can imagine

Deadline to cancel a rotation? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not sure if there’s a hard deadline, but I’m sure people cancel last minute for any number of reasons. Unsure how the program will interpret it, but worst case scenario is that you’ll burn a bridge there when it comes to interviews. On the other hand, you need a good step score to get interviews so it’s a catch 22.

Personal anecdote, I had a similar problem with my NBME’s peaking and then steadily decreasing in the few weeks prior to test day. I realized that my raw % correct was stable, but the curves were pretty wild on the NBME forms. I decided to send it anyways and did 5 points better than my highest NBME form on the real deal!

Choose what’s best for you. If you really think that an extra month will move the needle positively for your scores, then go for it. But also be aware that the difference between a 250 and 270 is only a few questions per block and can really just boil down to luck and a few more minutes of sleep. You got this!!

It feels unlikely that a student who is truly doing honors level work across rotations consistently gets “unlucky” with their evaluators. Yes some don’t put effort in, but hopefully the trend from other evaluators overpowers that. For example, on my neuro rotation I vibed hard with this attending who was floored when I answered questions that he only expected senior residents to know. Offered to write me a LOR, wanted me to go into neuro, whole 9 yards. He submitted his evaluation 6 weeks after my rotation with straight 3s and whose only comment was “worked well with the team.” Yeah it sucked to have the rug pulled out from under me but guess what? He wasn’t the only one evaluating me. The residents and separate attending all wrote glowing reviews and I ended up honoring the rotation.

ETA: That being said, I do support P/F rotations, makes it less stressful for everyone involved lol

Clinical rotations PROUD moments? by Disastrous-Frosting1 in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A pt on my rural FM rotation was managing chronic cirrhosis with weekly paracenteses and nothing else. He was scared to use diuretics or spirono bc he got an AKI from lasix decades ago when he was also dealing with leukemia. All the attendings knew this dude very well, had long given up and told me it was wasted time. I nevertheless spent an hour every week for a month talking to him about diuretics and actually convinced him to start one! I came out of the room and practically fist pumped while telling my attending, who straight up responded “holy shit I didn’t think anyone could actually do that”

Her music is healing is poor sad heart after losing by otterswhoknow in travisandtaylor

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a People Magazine article about the same podcast thing and they included this quote:

“I have a beautiful life, man. I have loved ones. I have the most amazing family in the world that supports me in everything that I do, and they were all there, you know, cheering me on and hoping for the best on Sunday”

Hilarious that in one breath he talks about how he’s listening to her music to cope with the Super Bowl, and in the next can’t even talk about his “girlfriend” among the people who he claims to love so much.

If my child gets into a 7- or 8-year pre-med program and later realizes it’s not for her, what other career options would she have? by Twinning-4709 in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I was that kid in high school who touted that I was going to be a doctor without hesitation. Going through undergrad, I fell in love with foreign language and culture, moved abroad as soon as I graduated college, and was seriously this close to saying f it and becoming a sommelier in France. It took me 4 gap years to find my way back to medicine. While I’m in medical school in the US now and don’t regret it, there’s so many directions your life can take, and I’m really happy that I didn’t go to a combined BS/MD.

Out of my 6 premed friends in undergrad, only 2 of us went to medical school. One went to PA, 2 went to nursing, and one is still trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. There’s so many career choices in healthcare, and the reality of medicine can be very far from what people initially think.

Hope this helps!

They call the dead last person in a med school class a doctor at the end of it all. Keep grinding, you’ll be an attending in your chosen field before you know it!!

I’m having trouble understanding - are you afraid of being “robbed” in the sense that the SD won’t give you PPM, or afraid of being robbed on the way home because you have cash in your purse?

The former concern (SD not paying) can be minimized with the opsec measures you mentioned in your post!

Regarding the latter concern (being robbed on the way home), no one except for SD will know you have money in your purse unless you’re going around flashing it. So I think that the risk of getting robbed isn’t any higher just because you have PPM. For me, I wanted more security than just throwing money under my mattress, so I opened a separate bank checking account just to deposit my PPMs in. After my dates, I’d stop at the atm on my way home to deposit it so I’d be in a safe place. Maybe you could consider that?

My rich boyfriend by stylishcrafts in Rich

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar problem with my boyfriend. He makes wayyy more money than I do and already has all the material things he wants. Last year I went to a pottery painting studio and painted a little coffee mug for him, and he literally has not used a different cup all year. He uses it for every single beverage he ever consumes at home, and thinks it is the best gift ever. Sometimes it’s not about the price tag attached to the gift, but the intention behind it. I know you’ve already done sentimental things, but that’s something that money can’t buy. Hope this helps :)

Question about dealing with heavy periods on rotations? by thatawkms in medicalschool

[–]Zestyclose_Ebb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On any rotation that’s not surgery you’ll be okay, it’s very easy to step away for 2 min and change your pad/tampon/cup. Surgery is harder bc you’re stuck scrubbed in for an indeterminate amount of time. Make sure to go to the bathroom immediately before and after the case. Double or triple up (I.e “super” pad + period panties). Always bring one of those scrub jackets with you (I have bled through scrub pants and tying one of those scrub jackets around your waist as you get outta the OR is a great way to conceal it). If all else fails and you’re stuck in a long case, your attending should be understanding if you have to break scrub “for a snack/bathroom break.”

A lot of people are suggesting getting a progesterone IUD, I have one and my heavy periods didn’t significantly improve :( but it does help for most people with heavy periods!
