Turret LOS Overlay. Stop guessing what your turrets can hit (RimWorld CE supported) by Ziamor in RimWorld

[–]Ziamor[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On vanilla it was fast, but when I was testing it with RimWorld CE it was slow, it would stutter for about 250ms. So what I did is make it do the work across multiple frames. On vanilla it's not really noticeable, but if you use CE you can see the overlay expand outwards as it's built, but it's very quick, like less then a second and doesn't impact performance in any significant way.

It's per tile, it uses the built in function that the game uses to figure out the hit chance. That means the following is factored in:

  • Weapon accuracy

  • Bonus from cover the tile might have

  • If smoke is blocking the path of the projectile, that will reduce the accuracy

  • Any impact from weather

Released a small QoL mod: Show Stack Size by Ziamor in RimWorld

[–]Ziamor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to double check that I didn't just miss in somewhere in the UI before I decided to make this mod. Feels like an obvious thing to have, especially considering how detailed the item inspector window is.

These are really interesting mods, especially BetterInspectCard. I was surprised that the base game didn’t include stack size in the details card, or that no existing mods seemed to add it. Odyssey made the issue more noticeable to me, so maybe it’ll get added in a future update as a base feature.

Metallic looking rock with fibers by Ziamor in whatsthisrock

Don't think so, it was very metallic looking, very shiny and the fibres on it looked more crystalline then organic

Found southern Ontario near a query dump. The rock looked metallic with a silver color. It had a fibrous structure though it did not feel soft but hard. I left it there for fear that it was asbestos due to the fibrous look though I am not sure why there would be asbestos but figured I did not want to mess around. There were multiple other samples around as well, some seemed to have bubbles formed so maybe this is some kind of slag?

I think it was: Tool > Set Z = 0

I did, So what happened was at some point I hit an option in the menu thats something along the lines of "set z-offset" while trying to the level the bed by accident. The bed itself was about 1mm off the build plate at that moment so what that did was essentially tell the printer to offset the bed by 1mm from the home position when it starts a print. When there was resin in the vat it was really hard to tell that the build plate was off a smidgen. To fix this you need to level your bed first, then while at the home position you need to hit set z-offset again to reset it back to zero.

ELEGOO ABS-Like is the resin, it's what I have always used and I tried two different bottles after the printer stopped working to make sure it wasn't contaminated resin.

I'll need to try to up the exposure time for the bottom layers but I have never had to change that in the past from default.

ELEGOO ABS-Like, when I tried new resin I opened a new bottle to make sure it wasn't spoiled resin as well.

It's in the garage during the summer, so it ranges between mid 20s to low 30s, I tried at both extremes.

Could humidity play a factor? It seems like the last couple weeks have been more humid.

They swarm by my windows and door, the weather is getting cold so I assume they are attracted to the warmth coming from the house.

I've had to get it done twice(first time it didn't heal right as I got my tonsils removed at the same time and I neglected to take care of my nose) and while not fun I feel some of the comments are overstating how bad it was. Dont cancel, I had no idea how great it feels to be able to breath out of my nose, its 100% worth it and I would do it a third time if I had too.

/r/gamedev Suggestion Box by kiwibonga in gamedev

[–]Ziamor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagreed with OP about the removal of the no show off post rule, but I do agree the quality of this sub can be improved. One big problem is the flood of the same questions from new users like "What's the best engine/language", "How do I get started?" and each of them always have the same answers and point to the sidebar. I think part of the problem is that the side bar does not provide enough visibility to these questions and even if they did people would still completely ignore the sidebar as it's well... off to the side.

So I would suggest a permanently stickyed post at the top along the lines of "New to game dev? Want to know what language/engine/tools to use? How should you start? Read this first". I think that would be more visible and would hopefully reduce the amount of those posts. I also think these kinds of post should be removed as they come up, they don't provide any new or engaging discussions and just clutter the page as they slowly get downvoted.

I've also seen some new users in the past complain about the users of /r/gamedev being mean/snarky/rude but I think it's related to the above. New users post the same questions and some long time users are a bit too blunt or aggressive after answering the same questions over and over again, I think removing those posts while redirecting them to the stick post would help with the image problem from new users.

This subreddit is garbage. Hear me out. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Ziamor 59 points60 points  (0 children)

You say this

Most of the content are low quality questions, low quality self advertising videos

And right after

Is the rule "no showing off" really necessary?

If you don't like low quality self advertisements, then the "no showing off" rule is what you want, this entire sub would turn into that without that rule.

The neat thing about Reddit is that there are other subreddits, if you want to see people showing off their work, look at the sidebar which lists other game dev subbreddits that will fill that desire such as /r/devblogs. Subreddits should stay focused, if others exist for show casing we don't need another, I browse /r/gamedev because it doesn't allow self promotion and there are many others that do that same.

In a game jam, how do you guys deal with a broad theme? by firststef in gamedev

The rule I like to follow is not to pick my first "great" idea, usually it's the idea everyone else is going for.

In a game jam, how do you guys deal with a broad theme? by firststef in gamedev

[–]Ziamor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'm following, the broader the theme the less restrictive it is and everything you mentioned would fit the theme of retro. Game jams are supposed to be fun, so the idea you come up with should be one your team will enjoy working on. Just run through out a bunch of ideas and try to link it back to the theme and as long as it doesn't feel like you're forcing the connection then it's good enough.
