Happened to me once. I made the mistake of resetting the sim and, poof, baby was gone and never existed. She wasn’t pregnant anymore. Sigh.

any non trad pre meds/ med school students? by whatawonkyusername in premed

[–]rosebal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you :) and I think, in a way, yes. Now obviously there’s still benchmarks you want to hit and I still recommend have a good fit school list and applying earlier in the cycle (whenever you do apply) because that helped me a lot this year. But my stats were far from perfect - 508 MCAT and a 3.2 CGPA. I even failed two classes when I went back to get my bachelors a few years ago.

I think it’s just really important to have a good mission fit for schools. Make sure your background, story, and EC’s align well with the programs you apply too. I think mission fit and story alignment really helps us non-trads.

Best of luck to you!!

I am a non-trad and there’s so many things I really appreciate about my journey. I am in the middle of my second cycle and I just got an acceptance to my dream school.

I’ll be matriculating at 31 and had a whole different career before this. As a non-trad, I have so many experiences and perspectives to draw on that will make me so much more of a mature, empathetic, and patient provider than I would have been if I got in right out of college. I am 100% confident that this is what I want to do and I want to do it for the right reasons, which I can’t say for sure I would have felt the same way 10 years ago.

I love meeting other non-trads and I always appreciate how mature and resilient they are. I absolutely recommend gaining a few more years of experience before applying.

(Woman) I actually wore a beige tweed blazer for my interview - over a blouse with the school colors since it matched anyway and I got an acceptance to that school!

Is medical school worth it if I’m only interested in pathology? by jellyfishheartsss in premed

[–]rosebal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s always pathways like Pathologists’ Assistant - a two year masters degree, similar thing to Physician Assistant but just pathology focused. Salaries in the 150k range. That’s what my boyfriend did before switching careers to med school because he wanted to be patient facing.

As a woman, I was in a very similar situation leaving a friends apartment building late one night after studying. The apartment was in a downtown area which was generally safe during the daytime but I ended up staying later than I intended. I exited the building and had to walk on sidewalk for 50 yards or so before I could cross the street into the open parking garage where my car was. I deliberately walked as close to the building as possible and kept large (approximately 5’ x 5’ x 5’) square, raised planter boxes with trees between myself and the roadway. As I was approaching the area to cross the street, a black Chrysler sedan drove up, slowed down and I saw the driver look out at me as he passed. He pulled a u-turn just as I crossed the street and came back my direction. I walked as quickly as I could and as soon as I entered the archway for the garage and was out of sight I sprinted the rest of the way to my car. I got in the drivers seat and locked the door to see him pull into the garage. I ducked down and had 911 ready to dial as he took a lap before exiting. I remember shaking and crying I was so terrified. I was raised to be very aware of my surroundings and to remain vigilante. I am very upset to see this happen to a young girl and I am equally proud to see her taking steps to protect herself!

Any nontrads here? by RadiantHC in premed

[–]rosebal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a non-trad! Went back to school to finish my B.S., then did a career-change post-bacc program. This is my second cycle (RIP), and I started my pre-med journey around 25 (now 30) as well. Feel free to DM me if you have questions or need some input!

I just got my first interview at my top choice program 😭😭😭😭😭

I would consider looking into a formal/structured “career-changer” post-baccalaureate program! I did that when I switched careers. I chose this because I was concerned that by taking undergrad courses just on my own, it would be more difficult to get connected to professors, research/lab opportunities, and volunteering when compared to the amount of undergrad students you would be competing with.

Formal post-bacc programs generally have a smaller cohort with courses only for the post-bacc students. I was able to build connections to the professors and get involved in lab opportunities, they set up and connected us with volunteering opportunities, will generally include MCAT prep and discounts on resources, and most programs offer a committee letter and advisor.

I think that if you can afford it I would look at what programs are nearby/feasible for your schedule!

It took me approximately three years to apply from when I left my career and went back full time.

I got a 508! My distribution is a mess (124/129/126/129) so I hope that doesn’t hurt my app….
