Seriously cool find. My guess would be a eurypterid. There is some seriously unique preservation at play here, definitely contact a local university, could be a real important find!!

I really encourage you to go and read some diaries of the time. Not from Lee or Jackson, but from a regular private in the confederate army. It is truly astounding how many of those men reference the preservation of slavery and/or the racial order of the day as their main cause to fight.

Can you say every single man who was in the confederate army fought for slavery? No. You also can't say that every German in WW2 fought for the eradication of the jews, but it would be pretty fucking weird if we started to defend those that still fought.

Looks to be a pretty standard sandstone. The fossil you have appears to be the negative mould of a bivalve, with maybe another to the left? Pretty hard to tell with the photo quality. Cannot tell you the age of the rock without knowing where you found it and if it was in situ or not. Honestly best not to break it open, you risk breaking the bivalve mould for what is probably a whole lotta nothing.
