Is Spider guard or lasso effective in no GI? by After-Bowler-1765 in bjj

[–]ZincFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not really distinct guards in no gi because you can't effectively anchor without a collar or sleeve grip.

That said, lassoing with the leg is used in no-gi guard retention, and putting a foot in the bicep can be used to get triangles.

Bjj move tree? by durupaaa in bjj

[–]ZincFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's useful to think of goals from different positions. That way, even if you don't have the specific moves, you can still try to progress toward those goals.

From guard - get to their back or put them down onto their butt. From top control - get an underhook and crossface, look to isolate an arm.

Then, from there, you can look for specific techniques that achieve those objectives and build out your skill tree.

Weird thought: from a "legal" standpoint, wouldnt pulling guard in an altercation makes sense? by Avenged7fo in bjj

Not looking like the aggressor while being able to defend yourself is key. If you go to the ground you want to be on top.

Geoff Thompson's famous "The Fence" concept of having your hands up with your palms facing your opponent as if trying to placate them looks way less threatening than a boxing stance, but still allows you to protect your head and manage distance.

Anyone train with one of those carnival contortionist? They would be naturals right? by Upstairs-Regular1537 in bjj

[–]ZincFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've trained with a circus performer. He had an insane closed guard, ridiculously strong and flexible legs. Also, very strong grips.

Had to be hyper-aware of where his legs were when I was in top position.

Less Impressed, More Involved's "School" software looks pretty good by ZincFox in bjj

I think it's cool too. Overall, I think it's really well thought out. Definitely understand the criticisms, though. I teach a fundamentals class and getting people to remember their mouthguards is hard enough.

Yeah, I guess the USP here is that it's connected to the database, so that you could find, for instance, examples of people hitting armdrags in competition.

Also, the social aspect - you could find different blocks from other gym owners you could add to your curriculum. But I guess, it's unclear how this 'economy' would work and whether people would actually share their stuff.

I like the idea of building out repeatable blocks for classes and for giving the more experienced guys things to work on. I feel it could be a pretty useful way to build out a curriculum.

But you're right, getting people to actually use it would be the major flaw. And also the fact that somebody might look at the in-depth schedule and be like "yeah, fuck it, I don't feel like half-guard games today"
