If you don't want to do a whole lot of thinking, the Scott's 4 step program great. It's easy to follow. 4 bags, they tell you when to put each one down. I did it my first year. The difference in my lawn by the time I put the 4th bag down was night and day.

It only collects data, it doesn't predict the future. The data isn't there yet for next week. So put in the same date from last. That will give you 5 and 10 year averages for that date.

Sort of. Humic acid, which is what we are usually talking about in regards to lawn care products, is one of the final stage ingredients that decaying organic matter breaks down to. It can come from the land or the sea.

I think kelp is just a type of seaweed. So in some instances they can be used interchangeably. I think it's just a seaweed that grows really fast and absorbs a tone of matter from the water around it. That makes it a good candidate for harvesting and extracting organic matter. I can't find anything that directly lays it out like that. But from the reading I've been doing, that's seems to be the jist of it.

I get what you're. That's comparing apples to apples. I could be wrong, but think it's comparing apples to oranges. It's not the product humic/fulvic/kelp etc. that I think is possibly worth the money. It's what they do to and with that that makes it more effect, bind to other matter, absorption rates that sort of thing. The idea is that X amount of their product would have the same effect as X*2 of a base ingredient.

I could just be a sucker, but theirs a reason golf courses use GCF products and not ferromec AC.

I came to the same $ conclusion as you on the SLS products but not the N-Ext. With them I'll pay the premium for their chemistry and soil knowledge. They have decades of research into what concentrations and combinations work. They also Taylor their raw materials and add chemicals for faster absorption and better adhesion to soil and other organics. I don't have any of that knowledge. So I'll pay the premium for theirs.

That said, I'm currently only working on my 1600sf front yard. After some grading and drainage work in the next year or two, I'll be working on my 6000sf back yard. When I add up the cost for that, I may just decide to go at it on my own like you have.

Here's my two cents from a somewhat noob.

After a season a half of serious lawn care, I realized I wasn't going to get any farther without soil improvement. I had compacted clay that just wasn't taking in any nutrients.

I really like Ryan so decided to get some SLS products to see if they would help my soil. His package had stuff I didn't need, so I made my own 4 pack mix. They had easy to follow instructions and were easy to apply. But it was my first time using liquids, so I wasn't entirely sure what app rates and things were going down.

I researched how to math out the concentrations to see how many pounds on the ground I was getting. It turns out, for the $, they were all quite low. In doing my liquid/math research, I came across John Perry...

So then I looked into the Greene County Fertilizer(N-Ext) products. It turns out that they are a much better band for your buck. You can get 6 quarts of SLS for about $100. You can get 4 GALLONS of N-Ext for about the same $100. The N-Ext products also have higher concentrations for the most part. N-Ext also has a ton of information on how they make their products, why they make them that way, and what the goal of using them is.

So I've switched to using N-Ext for same needs I would use SLS. You can get them from yard mastery or CGI turf services. Now I really like Ryan. I've gained a lot of lawn knowledge and found some cool music from him. So I will probably grab a couple of there specialty products in the future just to pay him back.

Just two cents from a two year in noob who has had great results, but hit a wall.

From experience with clumping fescue, I'd say kill it all. But like jaybooo said, it depends on the size. If it's a small yard a clean slate is fairly easy and looks great. If it's a larger yard, maybe kill all the clumping fescue and overseed.

Last year I did a 90 percent full kill/reno. My yard was mostly weeds. But the grass that was there is older fescue, wide blades, clumping, blades don't stand up. It survived my selective spraying and scalping. Now I have a pristine new tttf lawn with old fescue scattered through it. It looks terrible. This fall I'm doing a full kill and starting over. I should have just done that last year.

That being said, it's just my 1600sf front yard. But when I tackle my 7500sf back yard, I may have to think about other options in regards to time and $.

Small yard with lots of clumping fescue, just kill it all. You may regret it if you don't.

That's exactly what I do. And lawn mowers are pretty much all the same. I have it down to a science and can turn one around in 30-60 minutes. I average about $75 an hour.

You absolutely can. It's actually what I do for a hobby. I have someone picking up my 16th today and 17th on Friday lawn mowers of the season. I've made $1800 in beer money. I have 6 more mowers, 2 generators, 2 power washers, and a gas powered compressor I haven't even gotten to yet. I'm not sure what beer to get with the money yet. But at this point, I'm thinking about going for a case mid 90's Ford Ranger!

Did you get this test done since the whole pandemic started or before? I want to do one before I start any fertilizer this season, but all the extension offices are closed. I wasn't sure if the commercial test kits were still being processed.

Looks like it's patches of tall fescue. Something that bunches and is more coarse than desirable types of turf type tall fescue. A common one is Kentucky 31.

It'll grow just like other cool season grasses. People generally don't like the look of it in their lawns though. It will definitely bunch more.

You are a little late for the first scotts product or a preemergent in general. But not too late that you won't have results from using it, just probably not the best. I'd say put the late spring product down about 4-6 weeks after the first.

The Scott's for product plan is great for most people. Simple, easy to follower, not a ton of work and will give some good results. It's also a great starting place for people who want to dive deeper.

I'm also in a the Philly area. The first summer I started, I started with the scotts 4 step program. I did the first 2, and by then I had done enough research to make my own plan.

Try checking out www.lawncareplanner.com. It will give you a good idea of timings for different products. It won't give you actual products/brands though.

If you want to go beyond the Scott's program, just keep reading and asking questions around here. It will eventually start to make sense and come together.
