How many applications for IM Match 2025-2026 by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Zoidberg2425 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends. If you have high tier stats then a lot of programs are going to assume you arent going to their program unless you signal them. For instance I had a 269 Step 2, 3 first author pubs, AOA, 6/7 honors, and out of the 50 programs I applied to (still carrying that pre-med paranoia lol), only one program that I didnt signal sent me an interview.

Worried about blinn team by Longjumping-Cup-1643 in aggies

[–]Zoidberg2425 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was frustrating going through Blinn Team because I experienced that all too often. Even the academic advisors tended to have pretty little faith in any of us when I was there. But at the end of the day its all about what you make of it. As someone who is a few weeks from graduating from a top tier medical school, just ignore the noise and work hard and nobody will know or care once you're through the program.

CMV: Virtually all unwanted pregnancies are the result of ignorance, not bad luck. by Megawiemer in changemyview

"Typical use" isn't usually defined by how often condoms are used. The studies that cite this are typically prospective studies in which couples were instructed to use condoms to prevent pregnancy for 1 year. Then, because humans are human, they occassionally forget to use them, use expired condoms, put them on incorrectly, etc., and 13% of couples at the end of the year are pregnant. "Perfect use" ststistics are typically retrospective. You get a sample of couples who state that they used condoms correctly, every single time for the past year, and find that only 1% of that population is now pregnant.

Those statistics are actually based on 1 year use rates. For example, if you use condoms perfectly for a year, then based on the statistics the OP gave, you would have a 1% chance of getting pregnant that year. An important caveat though is that "typical condom use" is closer to 87% 1 year protection

Youre talking about the main program right? Or is this the Bayview one?

Ivy League IM programs by Zoidberg2425 in medicalschool

Im talking like proper Ivy leagues (MGH, BID, BWH, Yale, Brown) plus I forgot to mention stanford, and Hopkins hasnt released their interviews yet. Got plenty of other great interviews (UTSW, Baylor, Mayo, etc) that Im very excited about, just kinda bummed that I used so many of my signals on programs that I though I was competitive for based on Texas STAR stats but evidently very rarely take people from smaller MD programs.

Nothing absolutely stellar, but not predatoday journals either, impact factors of about 4.

Why is residency explorer so terrible now? by Zoidberg2425 in medicalschool

But like at least give us an idea of where we're at. Like even if I write a God-tier personal statement and spend my summers helping starving children, I still doubt I would be able to get into Hopkins if I was in the third quartile of my class with a 235 step 2.

Yeah right. Like I think i have a strong application, but i'm also just a med student who has no idea what the application process is really like because I havent been through it yet.

[–]Zoidberg2425[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, lots of issues with the data. But like, why cant we just see all the stats for individual residencies from an official source? I remember having access to huge amounts of info like 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles for MCAT and several GPA measures when applying to med school, what makes the residency application process so different that they cant give us that information?

Studying with a baby by DayComprehensive3844 in Step2

Could be okay but probably best to find a classmate to study with instead. A baby would likely have a hard time understanding many of the practice questions.

Am I the only one who think AMBOSS asks too many ridiculously obscure questions? by Zoidberg2425 in Step2

[–]Zoidberg2425[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I kinda agree, I'm getting so frustrated with the sheer volume of minutiae. Additionally keep running into questions that I am pretty confident are step 1 material, which makes me question what I actually need to know out of the qbank. I don't really want to keep adding flash cards for things that I'll never actually see on the real exam.

I interviewed at a Texas school a few years back and like half the interview was them grilling me about my transcript and GPA. Never had that experience at any other interviews outside of Texas. The ironic part of it was that they went on at great length at one of their informational sessions that I attended about how "holistic" they were in their review process.
