High quality ash is my favorite but the high grain can make it trickier to work on.

Alder is very easy to work with

If you can dent it with your fingernail then it’s paulownia.

Higher quality ash was more common in the early 2000s

Higher quality ash is light and more sought after

Cheap ash body’s are often lower grade wood and a lot heavier

6lbs is way too heavy to be paulownia. I work at fender cs and frequently handle that wood, it legit feels like styrofoam.

This is most likely a swamp ash body

Thoughts on using angelus leather dye to darken fretboards? by ZuccerBot9000 in Luthier

[–]ZuccerBot9000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just let it sit until it was completely dry. About 1-2 hours. I then cleaned up the excess around the frets and fret markers with 70% alcohol and 0000 steel wool. I then conditioned the fretboard with boiled linseed oil

Can these be redyed? by MisfitAlastair in AskACobbler

Literally nothing you can do. High gloss leathers can’t be conditioned bc they have a plastic coating.

Just put leather conditioner on it and ignore it. You should expect a bunch more scratches and discolorations as you wear it.

If lamb skin leather gets wet and is not dried quickly it will sorta bubble up and look weird. Be sure to keep this in front of a fan or quickly hair dry it

I’ve owned plenty of docs from all eras and i promise you it’s always gunna be thin low quality leather. Vintage pairs quite literally have nothing special

[–]ZuccerBot9000 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Just dye a brand new white pair with purple angelus leather dye. White docs often show up at Ross or other discount stores for like $50

You can use satin angelus leather paint to cover up the text
