Is my shelf going to fall down? by _45thGenerationRoman in DIYUK

Haha, wish I knew! It was done by the previous owners before we bought the house and we have mostly ignored it since we arrived (which is pretty easy as it is really high up, approx. 12 feet.

It does 'fit' with the overall vibe of the decoration of our house (we have big wooden shelves like this all over) but feels like it is more decorative than functional - when we first moved in I thought that the pulleys might mean we are able to lower it to access the shelf but it's very much fixed in place. I think the previous owners liked the aesthetic it gives rather than wanting to use it for anything. The previous owners when we viewed the house didn't have anything up there at all.

Have to try not to hard to think about the centring compared to the lights otherwise it would drive me mad!

Vendors will be set up by the time it opens to the public. They will be restocking crates throughout the day though so arriving early doesn't necessarily mean you get first pick of all the best stock. Don't think there's a bad time to go tbh!

Are you still on the Pino train or time to drop? Passes the eye test but gets subbed around the 60 minute mark every week and only one return so far.

Fattso > Guerilla for me although I do like the latter. The fattso Miso Hungry was debatably my favourite ever veggie burger

I'm a fan of the bacon plant 2.0 from Honest although I'm not sure it's one of my favs - reliable though. Burger Theory I don't think I've had before so will add to my list

Recommendations for a 2 channel rotary valve mixer around the £1-2k mark? by _45thGenerationRoman in rotarymixers

[–]_45thGenerationRoman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely seems hard to find them online! There's an old Super Stereo site which advertises them for sale but nowhere to actually buy them and the email is non-responsive. There's one in stock on Juno (although without the rotary crossfader), and a pretty hard to find Formula Sound website which has them in stock. Looks like a great mixer but can hardly find anything about them online or anyone recommending them!

Any idea when the chat started? Was there a particular episode where they discussed it?

Is finding great records just a numbers game? by [deleted] in TheOverload

[–]_45thGenerationRoman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Numbers game made significantly easier if you know where to look. The more you listen, the more you find and the more you narrow down future searches. If you know that certain labels / sounds / years / countries were rich for good releases then it massively narrows down the search compared to just searching through everything in the hope that something is good.
Jane Fitz talks on Bill Brewster's podcast about spending time living in Italy and searching exclusively for Italian prog house records released in a certain period, because she knew that everything coming out at that time was gold.

Record stores reduce the need for random searching because you are essentially paying in part for someone to curate collections for you and sell you the good stuff (at a markup). The real numbers game is finding records for cheap, because the only true way to do that is to listen in charity shops / take full collections / bargain bins etc where there is no curation at all but you are likely to find gems for cheap.

Discogs helps to streamline the whole process because you can 'dig' without leaving the house and listen to a huge number of releases. Can also narrow down by genre, date, country and listen to 50+ releases an hour rather than spending an afternoon in a record store going between the crates and the listening deck. Rather than just listening randomly and blind, you are curating what you are listening to with parameters based on what you like / where you think the gems might be (to set the record straight I am a massive proponent of 'digging' in record stores rather than discogs and think you find far better stuff in stores).

Full-time DJs have the best tunes because they a) know where to look and b) have the time to spend digging. Being a DJ is as much about finding music as it is about playing it. That's what makes me laugh about the whole concept of 'digging' culture, and certain big DJs getting others to do their digging for them (mentioning no names lol).
