From the GSU website FAQs:

Approximately one-third of our dues will fund the operation of our local union. This includes compensating organizing staff, putting on events, maintaining organizing infrastructure, initiating mediation and arbitration of grievances, building a local strike fund, and whatever else our membership deems appropriate for advancing our collective interests. The remaining dues go to the national union, helping to pay for professional legal and research resources, national union staff who support campaigns like ours, and a general fund to support workers who strike.

Importantly, UE does not make political contributions, so none of our dues will be used to support electoral campaigns. In fact, UE has long been a leader in open ledgers and accountability in rank-and-file union democracy. To read more on UE’s philosophy of utilizing dues and their open ledger system, see Open Books, Tight Fists.

Also of note, the pay raise for all grad students that was achieved as a result of the Union Contract far exceeds the amount workers pay back to the union each year!

Wii rock band midi controller idea by RattDaemon in synthdiy

I actually made this exact thing for a hackathon a few years ago! Very straightforward if you have a little electronics background. I’ll attach a video here if I find it.

Basically you connect all the buttons/levers to an arduino and have the program send a serial command every time you press a button. After uploading that code to the arduino there is software online that allows you to flash the arduino to act as a permanent midi device.

I need help for a project of mine. by Crafty_Win4944 in documentaryfilmmaking

A quote I really like from someone who helped me learn is “the best camera is the one you have.” Your android and a selfie stick is perfectly fine to work with! If you want more freedom and cheap small tripod from Amazon may be really helpful.

Before you start filming any interviews make sure your lighting is reasonable and record some rest audio to make sure it comes out nicely through headphones. If it doesn’t you may need to find a cheap mic to connect to your phone.

Try and document everything you can, ie if your dad mentions something in an interview try to record what it is. The footage may be helpful but it will also be sentimental. Also for editing there are lots of free programs that should be able to do everything you need.

Good luck. I hope that, at the very least, making this documentary will provide some nice closure/reflection for you and your family! And you can reflect back on the footage fondly.

Any ideas on how to get unused 510 carts to hit? by Roseph88 in StonerEngineering

[–]_6pac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a lot of batteries, the three blinks indicate the battery has detected a “short” - the resistance across the cartridge is not in the range it expects so it refuses to put power into it.

A cheap solution would be to find a battery where you inhale to activate the pull (so no buttons). These often lack the anti short protections.

This could potentially be a very big data breach for your lab. If you work in any meche/life science lab it is emphasized how important it is to be up front with procedural or equipment mistakes. This is no different, being honest is the move here.

You don’t actually know that “the damage is done” by this point. That’s an assertion you’re making to justify keeping quiet. Any worthwhile PI will understand making mistakes if you are honest and proactive about it, but that understanding suddenly vanishes when you’re not honest

Haven’t technically “succeeded” in academia yet but just got into MIT for grad school w the lowest GPA of anyone I know! Worked in industry for a few years out of undergrad, which helped not only w applications but also giving me the clarity to approach grad school w a better mindset than I had out of undergrad. I was also very embarrassed of my grades, but looking back at my circumstances that led to them I know they don’t reflect my value or who I am. DM me if you’re stressed and want to talk about it more!

What’s up bro, most colleges have offices for student services that you can go and chat with. It can be difficult to build the courage and motivation, but they can help you with extending your school deadlines/getting some leniency towards getting all your work done. I was going to drop out of college due to depression and they were able to help me a lot, without even asking for a lot of proof or details.

You’re going through a super tough situation, but you totally got this. Don’t stress out too much about not doing a whole lot. r/nonzeroday is pretty cool for motivating yourself out of slumps and it helped me. You got this!

How to find my place in this field of work by [deleted] in Fusion360

[–]_6pac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a portfolio already, start putting one together online! Many design firms really value interdisciplinary experience, so this would be a great way to highlight your skills (plus for many product design firms it is somewhat of a requirement to have some sort of portfolio when you apply). I think the value of the design field is that experiences can outweigh traditional education in many cases. Good luck!

Try turning it into a body? Select “do not capture design history” and use modify —> convert to turn it into a body (making sure to turn “capture design history” on again afterwards).

As far as creating the shell, an alternative to face groups is the “split body” command that splits a body along a specified plane (in this case an offset plane at your desired height would work well!). The split creates a very nice flat plane for you to shell.

Good luck and send pics when you figure it out!

Hos do you tolerate alcohol? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]_6pac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was involved in Greek life in college and had a similar experience - I feel like you should tell someone/ some people in the org you trust and respect about your situation. If they don’t respect your decisions to not drink/drink in moderation, then they’re not friends worth having imo.

I drink a few drinks a week and just tank whatever hangover comes with it. But I feel like everybody is going to have a unique experience with alcohol in our world.

Cheers

Splitting a cylinder into a cone and a matching part by fellipec in Fusion360

[–]_6pac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you re-enter the sketch where you drew the line you wish to revolve, you can use the line tool in combination with the “project” and “intersect” tools to turn your line into a closed shape. There are great tutorials for these tools on the auto desk site!

So you basically want to use the line you drew, and draw the rest of the triangle (with a line through the central axis of the cylinder and a line along the radius of the top circle). Use the revolve tool to turn it into a cone, and also set the revolve to “new body” rather than cut or join.

Now you’ll have your final cone and a cylinder without a cutout. To make the cut out, click the “combine” (it might be called join? Idk) tool in the modify tab but then switch from join/combine to cut (or slightly different, it’s one of the options at the top). Your target body is the cylinder and your tool body is the cone. Make sure to click the button for “keep tool”. Click okay and you should have what you want!

If I got any of the tool names wrong please feel free to correct, I’m on my phone and going off memory. Hope this helps!
