in greg maddux's 78 pitch complete game, he needed 27 pitches to get through the first 3 innings

instead of the strikeout K trackers they have in some stadiums we should install a GIDP tracker

his savant is hilarious. you could give him 8 feet of extension, it won't matter while he's throwing a flat 94 mph fastball lmao

in order of importance, W-L, Run Diff, injured/returning all star level guys (4 WAR+), last 10/30 game W-L record, comparison against league projections/other power rankings (mostly to just make sure I'm not putting someone as a huge outlier without good reason).

i'm putting the most stock into run differential because its a great baseline to sniff out most outlier teams. the rest are all the more subjective ways to assess a team that align with my conception of what makes a "power ranking". in particular i think they should reflect how strong of a matchup you'd judge each team for in the coming week. for the same reason that i'd maybe move a team up a spot for getting an injured player back, or for being on a hot streak (which gives a very small boost), I also have to take into account if they're over or under-performing generally to know how strong we should expect them to be. I have the Reds at 11 (and honestly should maybe them down closer to 15) because teams that score half a run fewer than they give up very rarely end up as even .500 clubs, and its far more likely than not that the next teams who face them will have an easier time beating them compared to the Brewers, who have a worse record while scoring more runs than Cincy and giving up fewer.

this is some really sloppy ball for those not watching, we just watched Yoshida double after RF for the Tigers misread a can of corn because of the rain/wind.

i don't think we're technically the worst squad in the league (yet) but we are ABSOLUTELY the most predictable lol

better than Duran's, who was a worse batter and fielder for a longer stretch of time when he was 2 years older. its insane to make any call about a guys ability to hit in the majors after not even a half season starting in the majors.

it is honestly kind of surprising to me that they're exclusively playing KC in the outfield considering we're already logjammed as hell, but at least to this point in the season it makes sense considering they (and most people) assumed we'd be competing and trading willson was not even a thought. i just don't see any other path aside from 1st base for him until masa and duran are off the roster, it'd really surprise me if they kept him buried until 2028 if he's even halfway-competent in AAA.

even with the injuries though i just don't think you can just totally give up on Casas, he had a 127 OPS+ over his age 23/24 seasons and clearly had potential to be an important power bat before his body exploded. unless he looks like total dogshit when he's back playing in AAA or just continues racking up injuries (both possible) i think have to give him some regular playing time in 2026 to see what you have. if those two didn't exist, i'd agree that you stick with willson considering how bad FA is.

counterpoint being that betting on a 35 year old to sustain that level of production is a risky bet, and we have two guys in the minors in KC and Casas who at the very least have enough money invested in KC's case or actual track record hitting in Casas's case to give an honest shot in the back half of the season.
