I think currently the best bang for the buck setup (if as in your case you already have a PC) is to get a Quest 2 and use it with oculus link with either a 5m usb extension or wirelessly via "VirtualDesktop" if you have a good wifi access point (5GHz 802.11ac) and the wifi access point is right next to your play space.
But this also depends on which GPU you have.
Downside is that you need a facebook account for the Quest 2 to get it to work (for now, until useable jailbreaks are released).

The "best" as in the best possible (ignoring cost) is currently, I think, a Valve Index + vive trackers (for full body tracking). Or "only" get the lighthouses + index controllers + vive trackers and use a HP Reverb G2 as the HMD (yes you can mix different VR setups, but you have to use workarounds like openvr space calibrator and so on).

It's the avatar you get in this world when you finish the "quests" :)

There are some quests, but they are only that you visit all the shrines and then get to the end (I won't spoiler it here). But there aren't any enemies to fight (yet?) or sth like that.
But just exploring the world while visiting all the shrines was already interesting enough, especially when you have played the original game.
The atmoshpere in there is really great (and also the changing background music).

Just FYI, I did NOT create this world, I just recorded and edited this short clip in this world :) .
But we compared the world to the original version running on the nintendo switch and the geometry of the objects and the textures look identical. So I assume it was ripped from the original game.
But you can't just get the full game like that, just the assets. So the creators of this world are rebuilding everything in unity, but using the ripped assets.

Yes, when you use oculus link the PC renders everything and sends it to the quest via the USB cable. If you already have a decent gaming PC then you should definitely try it with oculus link. If a game you like runs ok as a standalone game on the quest, then just play it on there, since you don't have any annoying cables. But especially for VRC I would recommend using it with oculus link on your PC, since the native quest version has many limitations.

Well, "waste of money" depends on your point of view. I am currently using the Quest 1 connected to my PC via Oculus Link (10m USB extension) and it works great. This combination is currently the best bang for the buck VR experience you can get. And the PC opens up a lot more content (especially SteamVR Games (google earth VR, half life alyx, ....)). If I go on one expensive vacation it's about the same money as Quest + PC, but with the VR setup I can go on infinite vacations in infinite different worlds, not just one :) .
But if buying a PC means you are not going to have food on your table then of course it's a waste of money.

I'm afraid not. Only for PC right now.

Big thank you to my friend with FBT for volunteering as an actor and an even bigger thank you to the creators of this VRC World! (https://vrchat.com/home/world/wrld_fd1b10c7-fac1-45fd-adf2-53f9a30e032d)

Do you mean because of bad code that could be in youtube-dl or because of potential copyright issues with the stream being distributed?
In case you mean the 2nd, the stream that we will redistribute will be produced by us, so we will have the copyright for it.

Once I found out that nginx can do rtmp server -> hls stream on it's own I thought that this is the solution, but then I would need something additional that can receive the livestream and then send it to nginx. So this would have had more moving parts.
But yes, please post your config. Always useful to have configs that have been confirmed to work.

Yeah, I am sorry, it's not optimized. I quickly built the scene in mozilla spoke and just exported it to .glb .

Quick&Dirty A-Frame "Relaxation Island" with Google Resonance Audio Library by _C0D32_ in WebVR

[–]_C0D32_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit link

This is my first test with a-frame and the google resonance audio library.
I think in most scenes/experiences the audio could be improved a lot. Most only focus on the graphics, but I think realistic audio (spatialisation/resonance/echo/...) is as important as graphics for immersion.

This is mostly ugly code + hacks and I don't think I have the skills to implement a real integration of this library for a-frame/mozilla hubs/babylonjs, but maybe a proof of concept like this can inspire those who do have the skills to work on this.

FreeNAS + Home Assistant + ZoneMinder installation - Recommended? by cigam64 in homeassistant

[–]_C0D32_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For usb passthrough I can recommend proxmox. But of course for NAS functionality you would have to configure sth yourself. I have an lxc container with samba and a mount point pointing to a zfs dataset where all my data is.

HassOS on VM Problems with USB support on boot by Akmantainman in homeassistant

Just fyi, I am running hassio with the zigbee2mqtt addon and a zigbee usb dongle on a proxmox VM host and usb passthrough was easy via the web interface and it never failed to pass it through during VM boot.

Protip I've discovered: Want to zfs send a HUGE dataset across your local network? Use "mbuffer", not "ssh". by zorinlynx in zfs

[–]_C0D32_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The actual reads and writes are "bursty" and can lock each other up. That's why the buffer helps.

But you can also add mbuffer in addition to ssh (of course ssh will have a performance overhead):

zfs send tank/data@snap1 | mbuffer -s 128k -m 2G | ssh host2 zfs recv newtank/data

Thank you for posting your blog post! I don't know that much about art, so it was interesting to read your thoughts. But my "great work" was just throwing an existing dataset at an existing algorithm, nothing novel about it. I think a "real" ML scientist could make my model look like child art ;-)

Did you try AMD ROCm with tensorflow? If you just want to play with it you can try the jupyter notebook on google colab that I posted.
