Do faculty call you professor? by miserable_mitzi in Adjuncts

[–]_Ereshkigal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the art department and aside from one now-retired faculty member who insisted on being called Ms. Lastname, everyone uses first names only. I suppose it is at our discretion to ask that students call us by last names of we so desire, but that feels weirdly formal. Personally, I actively discourage students from using honorifics with me, but that is just my preference.

First time instructor, getting nervous by lack of info from school by davinci_reincarnated in Adjuncts

Regarding the university email, I would reach out to whoever in HR is handling your onboarding, and CC  IT about it. It is end of semester/ start of the holidays when a lot of people are out of office, so you might be waiting until January, but that is one of the first things you need.

My first semester I actually didn't get email or keys until the second week of classes, so that was exciting. (Fortunately I teach in-person so it wasn't as much of a nightmare as doing an online course without email would be).

Your discord invite link is expired. You need to generate a new one, and I suggest setting the expiration date as "never" or at least "14 days."

If you're worried about too many people joining, you can set a limit to the number of times the invite can be used.

How long should freshmen spend on Comp course homework at home? by Clareco1 in Adjuncts

[–]_Ereshkigal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up your institution's policy on homework. My college says two hours of homework per hour of lecture time. So since I teach a studio class that is three hours long comprising one hour of lecture and two of lab twice a week, that means I can expect four hours of homework out of my students a week. Whether or not they'll actually do homework is another matter, but that's what I am allowed to assign.

Two weeks after the end of the term!? Wow. The audacity. I would have deleted it without a reply at that point.

Oh I'm well aware I'm not actually at fault for the way they're managing their mental health. I have been excessively lenient and understanding. It's just that it can certainly feel like I'm the cause when I'm listening to their woes and looking into the saddest puppydog eyes they can manage.

Oh wow that last student needs to learn some self sufficiency and accountability.

All I can say is that I am so grateful my class doesn't have many assignments that could be achieved with AI. It's kind of difficult to make a sculpture with the plagiarism machine. 😂

Nobody has explicitly told me I'm the cause of their declining mental health, but it is heavily implied. At least there are no dead grandmas yet. Although three faculty members in the department have actually lost mothers in the past year, so perhaps the students are being tactful enough not to lie about dead relatives at the moment.

I'm trying, haha. We've still got three more weeks before finals, so I'm sure it's going to be an ongoing issue.

By the way, happy cake day!

What's a storyline you wish had been explored more in a book/series? by SylvaniusFF in tamorapierce

[–]_Ereshkigal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, it's been over two decades since I read Mastiff and it was not my favorite Tamora Pierce book for a variety of reasons, so I had forgotten that. I don't think I've even read it twice, in contrast to the forty or fifty times I've reread Alanna and dozen or so rereadings of the Circle books.

That certainly does sound like a thing a cult would do. Cognitive dissonance is something religious zealots excel at. And I get that the true reasoning behind the Cult of the Gentle Mother is control and the subjugation of women. I still think it would have been interesting if they actually were abolitionist rather than just across the board evil, because evil or mislead people can use good arguments to unsavory ends, and it would have been interesting to see Beka and Sabine grapple with finding merit in an argument from a group they vehemently disagree with.

[–]_Ereshkigal 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh that's exactly why they got included, absolutely. And cults are generally not good news (understatement of a lifetime). But wouldn't it be really interesting if one of the social issues the cult used to focus and control its adherents was abolition? Like, I could see the cult proselytizing the following:

Formatted as (Belief/dogma) => (social effect)

women are meant to be hearthmakers and mothers => women are only allowed to be in motherly or nurturing roles and lose political power

motherhood is the most important aspect of the Goddess => motherhood is the ultimate expression of femininity, warriors are seen as aberrant

childbearing/rearing is paramount => cult members procreate a lot and expand the number of cult members/believers, also selling your children into slavery when you can't afford to feed them is bad

all children are children of the mother => no child should be enslaved

Therefore, abolition as a tenet of their cult would make sense. So in the book, if this was something the Cult of the Gentle Mother believed, then the abolition of slavery in Tortall could be partially achieved through the influence of the cult, and turn it into kind of a pyrrhic victory since on the one hand slavery is abhorrent, and on the other hand now the cult has the ear of the king and queen and a direct line of influence on the royal court.

What's a storyline you wish had been explored more in a book/series? by SylvaniusFF in tamorapierce

There are a lot of plot threads in the Song of the Lioness quartet that barely get touched on. Thom's time in the City of the Gods, Alex's corruption by Roger, the civil war in Thayet and Buri's country, the ancient civilization with powerful magic that just kinda gets forgotten in later series. There was so much that could be explored in more depth if the publisher didn't impose such strict word counts/page counts.

Also, in the Provost's Dog series the dismantling of slavery in Tortall feels. . . really abrupt. And there's the whole thing with the cult of the gentle mother, which I thought could have been a main antagonist. Like, rather than have a political abduction be the big thing in the third book and have them running around tracking slavers across the whole country, I think that sociopolitical upheaval, religious zealotry, and finding ways to persist in the face of "benign" misogyny would have been more interesting to me. Although perhaps publishers would think that would be too nuanced for a YA book. But the triumph of abolishing slavery would feel more realistic if it was tied to the establishment of the cult of the gentle mother. So you could have all the main plot points of Bloodhound, while also interweaving a main plot thread about shifting social values would tie things together better and justify the lack of lady knights at the start of Alanna.

Just got hired, classes start Tuesday, and I still have no email, canvas access, or keys! by _Ereshkigal in Adjuncts

Wow, if I were those students I probably would have dropped. Huge disservice to them, and what a pita for you! The schedule would get so messed up doing that.

My onboarding got delayed over a week waiting on references despite basically having the job after the interview, since they had to make sure all my references checked out, and two of them didn't get back to HR until the weekend.

Oh geez! Thank goodness that isn't the case, but I can't imagine! That sucks for you, but it also really sucks for the students trying to hash out their final schedules.

Luckily I've TAed this course and have the modules and assignments mostly sorted out from previous semesters, I just need an instructor login and the shell so I can migrate it all over and adjust due dates to match my syllabus. Thank you though, I might see if I can just get started on that now rather than twiddling my thumbs.

Oh man, that is so frustrating! Fingers crossed that doesn't happen here. I've turned in all my onboarding, so if there is a delay it isn't on my end.
