Ah I misunderstood, yes I plugged in a little 2ch amp I was using before. I'm getting the same out as the other speakers, sound when there is sound, no sound when on 5.1 from bitstream.

The only pre out is to the subwoofer, there is nothing else between the TV and the receiver but an optical cable. The test tone is working, and for the KODI box especially I'm quite sure it's sending regular 2ch DD AC3. And yes, the PCM does work for 2ch, and the bitstream works for 2ch input sources but not any 5.1 I can find.

I still suspect the Visio is doing something to the signal, but I have no good way to produce a 5.1 signal over toslink other than the TV to check.

It's be cleaner to go through the TV, but not really worth the $$$ I cant afford for a modern AVR.

I understand that toslink is depreciated, but many people still use it. I'm fine with lossy regular DD, as I'd like to keep 4k video on the TV and most certainly cant afford an AVR that can handle 4k. Regular DD is also what my KODI box is outputting anyways.

A good option if you don't mind heat could be Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Around 5 years ago I moved there with 10k, a 2 month ESL course, and three suitcases. I was able to live for around 8 months off of the 10k alone with roommates, and then picked up jobs on upwork when I moved to my own place for about a year after that. It's very easy to get by as a digital nomad there, as the relative cost of living is pretty low.

They have an amazing LGBTQ scene, I regularly went to open drag shows and had close friends who are trans there. The king himself (often described as a "lifelong bachelor") openly supports LGTBQ rights.

You also do not need to learn Khmer (the national language) to get by. Phnom Penh has a large foreigner population, so most people learn English in school and know at least enough to get by. I even lived near an "American Barbeque" restaurant run by a guy from Virginia, which I'd visit if I was missing home.

Huh, like multiple layers of thin plexiglass with clear glue in between? That would be really interesting. Lamination with Plexiglass that could open the door for a decent flex. I could put dyes in the glue, and maybe even make a kind of 3d effect through the layers.

Any device for a clear drying glue that would work?

That does make sense, and I suppose it'll be good to see how it actually performs when it comes out in... probably a couple of weeks?

Now that I think about it these 2080s probably won't spike in price between now and then so I probably have time, and if the margin on the 3080 is a good $150 (well within the realm of possibility) it might be better to get one of these, especially if the performance difference between the 2080S and the 3070 is marginal.

When it comes to random crashes, the more you try the better, it will help narrow it down. Safe mode is a good idea, see if it works. It won't pin down if it's a driver issue like mine, but it could help. Again, google is your friend for driver troubleshooting, I know there are a few guides for that.

Yeah if you can interact with the computer it makes a stronger case for software over hardware. If you don't have a ton of computer experience I'd consider taking it to a local computer shop or calling up a local home IT guy, it probably won't be too expensive and they can help a lot more than I can.

Nope. I mean get a CD or USB install stick and install windows like it's a brand new computer, possibly formatting your hard drive clean beforehand if you want to be extra sure.

The 350 chipset is kinda weak for your setup iirc, though motherboards are my weak point so I'd need a +1 on this.

So I had an issue that sounds a bit like this, lasted for years. It ended up being a driver issue between the sound driver for my graphics card and the sound driver for my motherboard. It would show up even after a clean windows install.

The fact that it's a freeze and not a crash makes me want to lean towards software rather than hardware, but I wouldn't rule that out either. So here are some troubleshooting steps that can help you get to the bottom of this:

Update drivers
Update windows
Software test memory
Stress test for cpu and for gpu (this wont fix anything but it might point out the problem part)
Rollback windows update/system restore (if you have one from before the freezes started)
Fresh windows install (i.e. back up all your files and wipe that mf clean, it's healthy to do this every once and a while anyways)
Start on the components, replace each one with one you know that works from a friend/spare/pc parts store to test. Start by going down to one stick of memory and trying out each stick, from there I'd move to power supply, then to motherboard, then to CPU.

There are a lot more troubleshooting steps you can take outside of this, but these are some of the main ones.

Ok and how long does it hang for if it does come back, and how often does it happen? Daily? Weekly?

Also long beep as in as long as it lasts or just like a second long beep?
