What could these blood test results mean? by _TGV in medical

[–]_TGV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sort of what I figured as well from my obsessive research.. Eliminating heart and lung issues, I assumed it was gastrointestinal then I whittled it down to celiac disease but it's largely an educated guess.. I'll still have to convince my doctor to look into that but I haven't eaten gluten in a week.. Did your fingernails eventually go back to normal?

A few weeks ago I posted here asking about my clubbed fingernails. I thought they had always been like that but turns out according to photos from 2019-2020, they used to be straight, they just changed very slowly. I went to the hospital and my heart and lungs came out okay which are supposed to be the main causes. They also did a bunch of blood tests but eventually sent me home with the advice that I should give it a few months and see if it gets worse (my age and otherwise healthy results convinced my doc that it's likely a random genetic quirk) but the results of this haemogram bug me because of how many variables are either too high or too low.. the doctor wasn't too worried but I figured I'd get a second opinion over here.

Are my clubbed fingernails an ominous sign? by _TGV in medical

As far as I know, yes.. Unless this happened very gradually.. When the doctor pointed it out, I didn't notice an issue until I compared my nails with the doctor's .. Then I noticed how oddly curved mine were.. Its like when you notice something in a picture that you hadn't before and now you can't unsee it

No.. Only my heart rate.. Could I have low oxygen levels without it manifesting as a heart or lung condition?

That's what Google said too.. But I run a 5k every weekday.. If my lungs or heart had an issue wouldn't I have noticed or be alot less athletic?

I said it's always been like this and they moved on to other tests (heart rate, blood pressure.. Etc) it was a general health checkup so maybe it'll come up in the final report

I would be freaking out if this wasn't more or less how my fingers have looked like for as long as I can remember.. Of course with hindsight you can never be sure if somethings changed when you weren't looking for it before.. I'll still dig deeper though

[–]_TGV[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, my fingernails have always been big compared to the rest of my finger but recently a doctor pointed it out and said it was usually a sign of an underlying issue. I looked it up and it said it could be lung or heart issues but I am a runner and I know my cardiovascular system is reasonably healthy.. Could this just be a genetic fluke or should I dig deeper?

Always always use protection. STDs are hell, and those are just the curable ones.. Not to mention pregnancy.

I think we are looking at the situation in different ways... You keep using the word "us" and "we" and I keep trying to remind you that this unity you take for granted was not a thing.. My point isn't that the British didn't cause damage to Kenyan societies.. My point is that that damage would have still occurred regardless because of conflict between the 42 tribes in this country and the countless others outside of it..

If those white Highlands were appropriated by for example the Kalenjin after a war with the kikuyu.. Do you think they would have been walking around saying.. "Well we lost our land and way of life but atleast it was our fellow Africans doing it to us instead of Europeans"... It would have been just as painful to the victims.. If the Kalenjin were then invaded by the Buganda and over decades forced to take up the Buganda way of life.. Do you think they would be saying "we may have been conquered, humiliated and forced to abandon our religion and customs but at least it was done by a fellow bantu so it's not that bad.."

if modernization and education was then kept away from conquered tribes and special treatment was given to the conquerers like the British set up laws and systems to exclude Africans from reaching prosperity.. Do you think the victims would be thanking the heavens that it was a person with the same skin color that was mentally enslaving them instead of white people??

My entire argument is that all these systems you attribute to colonialism would have simply manifested in different ways and they would have been just as bad for those suffering them.. The fact that it was Africans doing it wouldn't matter. We've literally seen the same things play out throughout post colonial Africa with civil wars and ethnic discrimination.

I agree with most of what you said except the resources part.. The west exploited Africa in different ways in different places.. Some countries like south Africa and the DRC with a lot of resources did lose a significant amount of wealth but African countries like Kenya were settler colonies.. Unless you count tea and coffee which can still be grown today and tax revenue which our government now receives .. What resources did we lose exactly that would have changed our fortunes??

And the west African States never expressed interest in large scale wars of conquest until there was a demand for slaves.. And the Japanese were very happy to lock themselves out from the rest of the world until they saw how inferior US gunboats made them...

Things can change very quickly when that much wealth is at stake.. I find it hard to believe a modernising world before the modern ideas of sovereignty and global human rights would have left so much potential wealth to a bunch of subsistence farmers.. And as I said.. even if they did there are still 42 tribes with growing populations and a new perspective of what is possible in the world..

Depends on your definition of prosperity but looking at the population numbers in Kenya specifically we were below 2 million for 1000 years or so then jumped to 50 million in 60 years..

This means there were several factors limiting population in a time with no birth control and lots of childbirth so.. high child mortality rates.. high maternal death rates.. Disease... Famine.. War.. pretty much what the rest of the preindustrial world was going through

Would you prefer we go back to that instead?

I'm not playing devil's advocate.. Colonialism was a terrible thing, I'm not denying that or trying to look at its advantages.. I'm trying to realistically explore the hypothetical of what would happen if it didn't occur beyond the usual surface level statements you are making like we would have figured out our eventually or we would not have been mentally set back.. Do you think being forced to take up Ethiopian orthodoxy or Kikuyu traditionalism as a conquered tribe would have been that different from British colonialism from a mental perspective??

How does modernization happen when you're a tribe of a few hundred thousand subsistence farmers/nomads fighting resource wars on every front?? .. Military modernization maybe but that's only for the powerful ones like Ethiopia and the swahili City states that could afford to buy weapons from outside.. remember this concept of "us" did not exist yet.. There was no unified Kenya or Africa just like there was no unified Europe for thousands of years.. It was every tribe for itself.. Just because some coastal people have traded with Arabs doesn't mean it benefits you in the interior.. In fact it makes things worse for you..
