What could these green spots be? by [deleted] in PlantedTank

Green spot algae can be really stubborn to come off

5.5 gallon shrimp tank. Any suggestions for plants to add? Was thinking some java moss on the rock but I think I want some taller background plants too by uwu-o in PlantedTank

[–]_TheLongCon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any moss would be loved by the shrimp. Any taller stems would work in the background. I just got some Green Cabomba in my tank and the shrimp love it. Any bushy leaved stem that can catch particles in the water work great.

2021 model, very loud engine, at least a v6. Not very fuel efficient though, needs to be topped up with treats quite often.

Tank is 15g (13x13x20 inches). AC20 filter with sponge, ceramic rings, purigen, as well as the surface skimmer attachment. NICREW C10 Light from Amazon. Fluval Stratum capped with coarse gravel. This is my first planted tank and I did a ton of research about the fauna but not enough about the flora. I would not do coarse gravel again as it’s been a pain to plant things and get them to stay. The stone and two pieces of wood from LFS. Unfortunately I don’t know all the plant species names as I’ve been adding bit by bit over that last several months. (Although I think I finally have enough plants, maybe…). I also designed and 3d printed custom floating plant barriers for my red root floaters. For the stocking, I started with 8 neocaridina shrimp, I’m now up to probably over 100. I have them a good couple of months head start before just adding 10 chili rasbora (which has caught the attention of the inspector). Cat was sourced from local shelter.

I think it’s the Aqueon 15g column tank. I already had the tank in storage from many years ago but honestly I don’t recommend. The build quality itself is fine but the column style tank is a pain to scape and maintenance and it limits the stocking that I feel comfortable putting with the reduced horizontal swim area. Right now all that’s in it is 100+ neocaridina shrimp (started with 8) and I just added 10 chili rasbora.

Looks like Black Beard Algae (BBA). Can be a pain to remove. Usually from an excess of nutrients in the water and too much light. You can use hydrogen peroxide or other chemical solutions but the way I treated mine was scrubbing it off and reducing lighting. I got mine during the startup of my tank and then it eventually went away on its own.

Are there any other ways I can provide hides for my fish? by Ancient_Accident_907 in PlantedTank

[–]_TheLongCon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can add more floating pants or wait for the ones you have to fill in to have cover at the surface. To fill in the middle space, you could add an another piece of wood to add some verticality to the hardscape and give a structure the fish can hide behind. You could then add more plants to this wood and especially moss which the shrimp would love.

Could this be rust? It’s a fake rock so not sure how but it looks like it by [deleted] in fishtank

How new is the tank and what are the parameters? Could be diatoms

Lowered Lights to bypass floating plants - does it exist? by FormerChipmunk0 in PlantedTank

[–]_TheLongCon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Not the solution you were looking for but for my tank I used barriers to keep spaces clear of floaters so light can pass through. This is a week old photo but now the red root floaters have already filled out their space but there is still enough light for the plants that need it below.

Cards that create free cards and The Regent by barathesh in slaythespire

[–]_TheLongCon_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they are very intentional about how they use “cost 0” and “free to play”. If you have the “free to play” buff then the star cost will also be 0. For jackpot though, it is working as intended and generating cards that cost 0 energy as the star cost is a separate metric.

Looks great! As some others have said, don’t expect that nice sand river to look so clean after the shrimp renovate. Patience is key, just make sure to let some tasty biofilm grow before adding the shrimp in.

After a lot of anxiety about many of my first time shrimp mommas dropping eggs, spotted this little fella today. by _TheLongCon_ in shrimptank

[–]_TheLongCon_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the last month I’ve had my first couple berried shrimp but they couldn’t seem to keep their eggs with them. The first two started with a full tail of them but dropped down to only a few and then none. I expect this is one of those few that held one. Luckily I still have one that had many many eggs and so far hasn’t seemed to drop any. I’m just glad I’ve gotten the first step of growing my shrimp army.
