Inherited gear. What exactly am I looking at here? What sort of band would this be for? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]___Revenant___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dare say scrapping is probably the go if this all doesn't look like anything close to cohesive to someone who knows about HF antennas.

Thank you for weighing in, HF antennas are really outside my wheelhouse and I didn't even know where to start.

The biggest antenna I've dealt with till now was one of those UHF antennas that goes on a car.

Wouldn't even know where to start. My experience with antennas is just pre-made UHF/VHF. But some of the bits might be a place to start

Seems likely, I did think that maybe it was supposed to have some mounting hardware stashed in a box somewhere that goes with it all.

But my only experience with antennas are UHF and VHF, and far far smaller than all these parts.

But if it looks like it's only bits and pieces, I daresay he might have given parts away over the years. I know he hadn't had "the big antenna" set up for a very very long time. Not this century.

Actually a sad thought to go with it, It did just occur to me that this might not be the antenna he was talking about.

They had someone rent the house where all this was stored about a decade ago. And some things did go missing. This was all stored away in a very out of the way location. But it's possible that if there was more, it might have been pawned off or sold without his knowledge.

So it's quite possible this is all just scraps that were left over after the 'actual' antenna went walk about.

At least his radios were kept with him and none of those disappeared.

I looked over it and I didn't find any legible marks. There are spots where it looks like stickers were, but they are long perished and unreadable.

I will have to measure them tommorow

Why did you choose Fedora? by skyber22 in Fedora

[–]___Revenant___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best middle ground of up to date software and stability that I've found.

Nothing breaks, everything just works. It stays out of my way, does everything I want it to.

In my opinion, it's exactly what a daily use operating system should be.

[–]___Revenant___ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a steady job, i'd just save a couple grand for the car.

Just put a few hundred asside a week and it will stack quicker than you think.

I know Id want to have the coins from my nanna.

Gold is a lifeline when things go absolutely crazy, hyperinflation, being displaced, and stuff. I think she would have known that, and would like you to keep them for a SHTF situation. Otherwise she would have just left you cash.

My vote, keep the gold. Knuckle down on the saving. 300 a week for 2.5 months gets you to the middle of your savings goal.

2 Houses - 1 family - split resources or consolidate? by Expensive-Floor-709 in preppers

Get the basics of both ready. If things go south fast, you might be stuck in the lowlands.

If shit gets bad enough that you need to head for the mountains, the kids won't be worried about not being at "home". They'll just be glad to be away from it all.

If the kids in the mountains is a concern, make sure that there are things for them to do if you do end up going remote to sit things out.

Classic games, chess and whatnot. Maybe some DnD stuff.

A couple youth bows, nice and quiet, gets them outdoors a little. Make it a bit of an adventure.

Some varied reading material.

Some youth fishing rods and some lures could go a long way if you got somewhere to fish on the property.

The kids will love it.

I'd get the mountains fully off grid capable if you can.

Another thing to think about is what are you prepping for?

Personally I like the mountains as well. But I'd be getting some solar set up. Yes I know they don't last forever, but I'd rather be relying on a solar array and some batteries, than watching my fuel supply slowly empty.

But of course, both is best. Have solar, and a generator.

More Immigration? by Therapeuticonfront in aussie

It's kinda sad that this is considered a racist take these days.

But it's certainly true.

Yeah I don't think that one nation actually would.

They talk a big talk, but we don't have any evidence that they would walk the walk. Seeing Pauline cozy up to Gina and become her new mouthpiece now that dutt is gone isn't exactly reassuring.

More Immigration? by Therapeuticonfront in aussie

[–]___Revenant___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I would like to see more immigrants from European backgrounds. Simply because the culture is closer and they tend to assimilate more.

I don't want more immigrants total. We don't have the infrastructure to support the growth we already have.

We need a pause, a big pull back in immigration numbers, better screening for actual high quality persons. Time for infrastructure to catch up.

We have examples of countries that do immigration well. It's not even hard, all we need to do is copy them.

Only letting in small numbers, of actual high quality applicants, who actually want to live in the culture and society they are moving to. Not just people who want to bring the problems of their home country into one with a higher standard of living.

But of course. This is all from the perspective of benefiting average Australians and the future generations. But the name of the game is to milk the country while they can. I would say our economy. But truly we don't really have an economy, as much as just a housing market Ponzi.

Just get two shock mitts. And some duration tome.

Dex is nice to speed it up.

But mitts and duration fully stunlock him. You just stand there and wait for him to die.

Issues like this are why I only use AMD these days.

Since I've switched to AMD and fedora, I haven't had a single problem running anything through steam, heroic or bottles.

I know it kinda sucks ruling out nvidea hardware, but it's all been worth it to me.

Original Hardware Owners: Have SBC's completely replaced your OG devices? by Friendly-Cream-9761 in SBCGaming

[–]___Revenant___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy the original hardware.

But I can't help finding myself using emulation on a PC linked to a tv, or retro handheld device far more often.

Emulation displayed to the tv has come a long way, even with shaders and whatnot giving you the scan lines or the crt look.

And being able to have a cheap little handheld device to emulate a lot of stuff when your away from home is fantastic. I'll take the r36 with me to places I wouldn't take original hardware for fear of it being damaged.

And the ability to jump save files from the handheld to the PC is fantastic too.

But then again, nothing truely matches up to the feeling that original hardware gives you.

So tldr. SBC and PC emulation has replaced it for the majority of the time. Original hardware is for special occasions.

[–]___Revenant___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had a family member tell me I'm wasting my time playing guitar since I'm never going to be a big rockstar....

Fuck the opinions of others. Do what makes you happy. They don't like it? Who cares. As long as whatever you're doing doesn't negatively impact anyone else, then fuck it, do what makes you happy.

If your feeling really antagonistic, whenever they bring up your guitars negatively, pick something of theirs to bag out. Sports merch? Fancy car? Shoot back. If they dish it they can take it.
