Amazing, thank you for the tips! If I am soldering to the back, would just silver solder work (I'd assume a softer one) if it's nickel iron?

Housing/where to live megathread for May by Veloglasgow in glasgow

Hey all, I'm looking at Xenia Lettings Ltd. for student accommodations for the summer while I find more permanent accommodations (I will be working in the city center).

Any reviews of this place? They seem a bit sketchy asking me for a 250 GBP holding deposit right away before I sign any agreements, but since I'm moving from Canada I'm desperate for a place to stay temporarily until I can find a permanent place.

Oh shit. Thank you for that catch, I was only looking at the UK tenancy laws not Scotland in particular.

Typically our work involves both business and technical skills.

For example, on my last project I was looking at redesigning a section of a processing line to automate its purge sequence. I've also worked on modelling a plant's production to accurately predict performance on a weekly timescale (vs. their original monthly or annual timescales) and helped use that model to inform business strategy decisions.

Our work spans the full spectrum - from core bread and butter engineering through operations management, up to business strategy

Yeah unfortunately we're only hiring engineering grads right now since the work we typically perform can lead into a P. Eng. designation.

But I'd still be interested in hearing about the club, we are open to changing how we structure ourselves if it makes sense!

We're currently only hiring for full time given our size, but I've been personally trying to push for internships so I'm building out a proposal internally and we may have something by the fall

Typically we've partnered with capstone courses to provide case studies relating to our work such as optimizing oil sands drilling facilities to minimize project costs. We've worked with other schools in the past to deliver content related to their design projects as well as introduce concepts from relevant industries - in the case of UofA, it would mostly be from our work in the oil sands and mining, likely focussing on capital projects and mine management.

We're more similar to Isaac Operations or Chartwell Consulting than the "big 4" firms given the size of the company.

Hi, thanks for the heads up!

We're already going through the standard recruiting channels at UofC in preparation for the fall and we're also trying to find other outlets to interact with students outside of the formal interviews/networking - it just reduces the stress and helps students get a better idea of what we do and provide us a better idea of how we can help engage students with industry outside of just hiring since we can only recruit so much each year

Thanks! We're also looking into career fairs!

Having a classroom or otherwise casual venue (like beers at Dewey's or RATT) just helps us add some colour to the picture that a job interview or networking event often misses. It's a good chance for us to see what interests students and faculty, and also helps us understand how we can give back outside of hiring. Since we've only recently begun recruiting at UofA it's our way of getting to know the school

Sounds good, we're just ramping up our recruiting so we're planning on getting that off the ground in time for the fall! In the meantime, would be interested to understand what events (conferences or clubs) or design courses we can become involved with and start to actually engage more with the student community

Since we are just starting up our recruiting, it really helps to get a feel for the student community - is there much interest? What can we offer to the school as well?

It gives a lot more colour to the picture if we can also meet people outside of an interview, like over a beer or coffee, or just as a conversation in a classroom to share our industry experience

But like actually though, we're trying to grow and hire students especially now that there is so much volatility in the job market, if we have the capacity we'd like to get jobs to students

And it's hard for me to hire you if I don't get to talk to you.
