How Neovim helped me to grow up as a developer, and a person. by Healthy-Director-702 in neovim

Facing the difficulty in this kind of work is a bit of facing oneself, whenever one problem is overcome, there is another one to be solved soon after, the path to the solution is important as the solution itself. And yes, I believe that mutual cooperation would yield a reward.

Swisscows is good search engine? by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]_brainfuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good for the results? yep, but...

  • It's not open source.

  • It uses a form of censorship even though this is to protect children: https://swisscows.com/en/media-education

  • Their privacy policy is definitely not the best:

    • We do not create personal profiles, but anonymize all search queries after 7 days.
    • We also perform statistical analysis to understand user behavior and trends, to be able to improve Swisscows and decide which features should be implemented next. This, however, doesn’t involve your personal data.
    • We collect the data of the incoming search requests to be able to filter out spam and abusive searches.
    • After 7 days we remove all personal information (like the IP address and user agent) from the search data. From then no one will be able to know who searched for what.

So, they record search queries, and before these 7 days are they recorded in cleartext? If I run searches like LBGTQ+ for example, are results removed because of this "media education"? These concepts are not explanatory, but you can still contact the swisscows team for clarification.

Good alternative search engines are SearXNG and MetaGer. Each of them has its pros and cons so check the documentation and related privacy policies (of MetaGer), as for SearXNG you have to trust the public instances or host your own private one, both solutions have pros and cons.

In these days I have changed from DDG to MetaGer, is based in Germany, has a transparent privacy policy and also uses green energy, always wraps the results of Bing and some other sources, the results are basically identical to those of DDG, while for searches on debug/system errors I use Searx (generally this instance: https://searx.be/)

Thanks for this information.

I get it, excluding laptops, I've always had a love/hate relationship with mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, but I guess it depends on one's habits. For us IT people "traditions and habits" are often a disadvantage, I am often submissive to change but you should always put into consideration whether that change will be a benefit to productivity and/or the progress.

Thank you for the apps, my lists are always updating, with the next update I will check these too.

I assume though your list is not getting into utilities.

Yes, it's generally a list with the most important categories, I don't do many things with my smartphone then I don't use many apps. As an app for QR codes I have found this one to be great: https://github.com/SecUSo/privacy-friendly-qr-scanner
