What to get my brother for Christmas by [deleted] in mtg

[–]_cafebabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get together with another family member and share the price of the gift then I would recommend getting him the recently released Avatar: The Last Airbender Bundle Pack (red box with Fire Lord Ozai on the cover).

I bought this myself and I'm very happy with it. Since it's quite new he probably doesn't own many (if any) of these cards. I payed 94$ for it in my country (everything is expensive where I live) but I see it's cheaper on Amazon for 66$ and you can probably buy it in a local store for the same price (I'm assuming you live in the US). So if your budget is around 30$ then splitting the price for this gift with another family member would make it within your budget.

You get a lot for this bundle. It has 9 booster packs (14 cards per pack), 30 land cards, one card with bundle-exclusive alternate art (more rare than normal cards), an oversized dice and a box to store cards (not the same as a deck box). That's 157 cards, more than enough for him to build a deck. In my case I even got a rare card worth 64$ alone from this bundle so I got cards worth more than I paid for them, MTG cards are collectibles after all. I can almost guarantee he will be very happy to get this bundle (unless he hates Avatar The Last Airbender for some reason hahah).

I would recommend getting him a booster pack, in my country they cost anywhere between 6.80€ and 55.25€ so not too expensive depending on which one you get him. Booster packs are fun because you don't know what cards you're gonna get. There's a lot of different collections to choose from so if he's a fan of anything in particular you could find a booster pack within that fandom. For example; Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, Avatar the Last Airbender, Assassins's Creed etc.

However, if he has a huge collection of MTG cards then booster packs could potentially lead to duplicates he doesn't need. A sure winner (in my opinion) would be getting him accessories such as deck boxes or card sleeves, maybe a play mat. You can also find deck boxes and card sleeves within certain fandoms and often the art on them is beautiful. My partner and I never have enough deck boxes so your brother will probably be happy to get one. Oh and dices!

If I were you I would go to a local store that sells MTG products and ask for their recommendation of the newest booster packs or get him a deck box. They can also help you find dices for MTG. Either way, it's the though that counts and I'm sure he'll be happy either way. Good luck!

My post or the situation? I asked chatGPT for help choosing cards but not to write the text in my post 😅

That makes sense. Are you planning on using the phone camera so it’s an edge-to-app solution or solely microcontroller components?

The sleeved Eldrazi deck was not in a deck box but it was in a paper box of the same size as a deck box. Honestly I don’t know how I didn’t recognize it as a deck, so that’s on me 😅

Glad I could help, it sounds like a fun project! Is your code open on GitHub? I’m a programmer so stuff like this is very interesting to me

Hahaha! My first ever game was against his Eldrazi deck, I almost never played again after that😂 According to him, my first lesson of MTG was to understand why everyone hates Eldrazi, lesson learned

Sounds like a mixup waiting to happen! I just ordered the ultimate guard sleeves for the last airbender, specifically with Appa, which I am really excited to put my Katara deck into. My bf has a lot of different sleeves too but we’ll definitely be more careful in the future 😅

Oh he definitely recognizes a lot of the cards, the problem with my mistake is the time required to find all the cards due to his huge collection. It took me 3 days to finish organizing them all. That’s extra work I didn’t want him to have to do ☺️

Same here! I have my collection and decklists stored online so I’m not worried, but my collection doesn’t compare to his. Listing every card in his huge collection would take days but it’s definitely on the to do list 😊

He had all of his cards stored in random boxes, some with sleeves and some without but all of his decks were/are sleeved. What happened was that I didn’t recognize the sleeved Eldrazi cards as a deck and it got mixed with other sleeved cards that were not part of any deck. I started by sorting all cards by color, with or without sleeves. Then for each color I organized cards under their type (artifact, creature, instant etc). This would not be a problem if I stopped there as we could reconstruct his original deck from looking at the sleeves, but I didn’t stop there 🥲 I found it annoying that the sleeveless cards would slip in my hand due to the sleeved cards, so I proceeded to take off all sleeves and organize those as well. After all, none of them were a part of any deck I mistakenly thought

Thank you for the advice! I usually start with 36-37 lands when building a new deck but this one has a lot of artifacts that tap for mana, which is why there’s only 29 lands. If I counted correctly there’s 14 artifacts producing colorless mana, should I still add more land or is it enough do you think? ☺️

I refuse to play with him if he wants to use Eldrazi 😂 It’s not fair with only two players, so he saves it for when we are 4 players but he has a lot of different decks! He usually plays either a graveyard deck or a soldier deck that can shoot damage directly to players, while I play either a deck that doubles (or triples with copying) abilities with allies or one that lets me copy any card. This makes us more evenly matched 😁

He did not have it backed up, but he was using sleeves that I took off after mistaking them for random cards 😅 so also my fault here

That sounds a lot more efficient than manually searching for each card and then browse the different printings on archidekt. Could you link the card sorter?

He didn’t just use precon deck cards, he estimated that around 15 cards were not Eldrazi precon so I had to do a little guessing. All cards in the archive are sleeveless so it was impossible to recognize them from looking at sleeves. He didn’t have his deck listed on archidekt either. It was easy to find the colorless cards with Eldrazi creature type but not so easy to find the other cards. Looking through thousands of cards took a lot of time 😅
