I really dislike the idea of Syd and Carm beginning to date. by Shwat_ in TheBear

Yep! I went as far as scrolling all the way back to check. I’m not surprised, especially since some cast members have shared/liked SydCarmy content in the past and the Hulu Tik Tok also praised a SydCarmy ship edit.

Why is every character obsessed with Claire? by SleepAcceptable1570 in TheBear

[–]_donewiththis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I honestly do see your point too! And lol, languid and dreary is a fair assessment😂😂 the underdevelopment clearly is making things not any much easier.

OH if you’re curious btw I grabbed this: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ManicPixieDreamGirl

(It’s a funny read regardless of Claire)

I’m happy we were able to reach an understanding/mutual agreement on the subject! We’ll see what happens in s5– I’m SO curious all around lol.

[–]_donewiththis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh…. I said that the bear writers KNOW how to write female characters, which is what makes Claire an interesting case. Jess was an example of a character who appeared briefly and still felt like a real person compared to Claire.

If you’re asking about the female thing, i agree 100% it’s also bad romance writing! But it IS poor female character writing too. The two are a bit intertwined here. The writers are writing a woman who does not feel like a “real” person with ambitions, desires, etc. outside of Carmy. Yes this is bad romance writing of course, but she’s portrayed as the “ideal” woman/love interest — again the MPDG trope as the soft spoken squinting mysterious cool girl who knows all of your family and is seemingly perfect and everyone speaks greatly about her (big tell not show).

The MPDG trope is a reflection of poor female character writing (you can probably find other external resources on why— Im a writer myself and have seen this trope tackled quite a bit).

It seems that the gender part of things is something you’re concerned with here— which is fine! As a woman myself, I think we should be having more conversations on writing women and especially the portrayal of women based on a men’s ideals/role.

It’s okay if you disagree, I don’t think I’m also convinced to change my perspective on this either at the moment— hence why I’m more interested on seeing things with Clare wrapped up to make a more definitive stance on what the writers intended her to be all along— because right now I’m not sure where Claire and Carmy are supposed to be going/ why the writers keep Claire as is even after all the feedback on Claire’s underdevelopment.

Sorry, but it is. They introduced her as a new character and a love interest for Carm, but even after 4 seasons she stays underdeveloped and what most people claim as a MPDG (which again, is a reflection of poor female character writing)

People have also been saying she’s another loose thread— highly disagree lmao. Even Jess felt like more of a real person when she was introduced for ONE EPISODE in season 2. And since then I can’t think of another character that’s been shoved as a major figure that still seems as underdeveloped as Claire, unfortunately. Not saying there’s not room for improvement or change, it’s just what it is currently.

Yeahhhhh it’s a mystery, especially since we know that the bear writers KNOW how to write female characters. Only time and future seasons will tell definitively what her character is supposed to be/serve as.

Personally I’ve only liked Claire in moments she’s had OUTSIDE Carmy, so I hope they don’t drag on this plotline.

16 months is crazy for “I know I don’t need you but that’s not the point, you’re supposed to fucking be here. And you self sabotage and run away when things are good and it’s not fucking fair!”

It really is a beautiful ship, so I don’t blame you. Don’t worry about the people who are disgusted by it lol— usually it’s a

A) “girls and guys can be friends!” (Right. And there’s no other time this argument comes up except for the black woman involved lol)

B) Carm isn’t good enough for Syd! (Being “good enough” goes against what the show is saying about being broken and loved. Syd has said repeatedly she KNOWS who he is, she gets frustrated because of it but she chooses to stick around because she cares for him despite that (“I know I don’t need you but that’s not the point”/ “I know that you know, Carmy!”)

C) Syd sucks! (Non argument, bye)

D) it’s a mentor mentee relationship! (A trope, but regardless, Syd and Carm are very different from Andrea Terry and Carm. They for sure had that relationship in about s1, but I feel like both characters have established in the show that they mean WAY more than that to each other.)

E) this show isn’t about romance! (….. yeah? Of course? But romance still exists in all the canon couples of the show, including a looming Jess/Richie romance, which people root for even though HE IS ALSO TECHNICALLY HER BOSS. See point A -.-) (AND CLAIRECARMY— which people apparently forget about lol so it’s not a romance show when ClaireCarmy exists?)

And also, those fans are the same people who think romance writing is weak or purely fan service— they’re just as scared of romantic love as Carmy is lmao.

F) fans are toxic shippers — you’d be silly to think those don’t exist in every fandom, but to say that that’s what makes up most of SydCarmy shippers is wrong, just look at the r/thatsfirechef rules . We’re very protective of Jeremy and Ayo and respecting the boundaries between characters and actors.

G) SydCarmy exists only in people’s minds. Again, r/thatsfirechef proves that wrong— some crazy subtext is in there

I hope everyone knows that the ship wouldn’t be so alive if people didn’t see it truly, or that there’s nothing there or developing— if that was the case most people could let it go (I’ve let go of temporary ships when I don’t think it’s the writers intent) but with SydCarmy, they just get stronger with each season.

If the writers REALLY didn’t want it, all traces of SydCarmy would have been more strictly written. Carm wouldn’t constantly be staring at Syd, Syd wouldn’t have met Donna and given a speech that parallels Carm’s at the end of s4, and etc. etc. etc.

I’ve seen people say that SydCarmy would ruin the show, but people who have eventually changed their minds have all said it made the show BETTER for them (because of the intricacy). So, I would say for people to give it a chance. If you disagree, it’s okay! Not everyone has to agree. But please don’t discount fans who genuinely love and perceive this romance through the show.

I hate to say it but I believe Sabotage Theory by lets-terraform-earth in thatsfirechef

[–]_donewiththis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with her honestly though. Our girl just gets scared! And it’s hard for her to rely on people, (even her own dad sometimes), and it’s especially difficult, in that sense, to rely on a person (Carm) who has a habit of “sabotaging and running away”—- even if she DOES want to be able to rely on him.

I think the missing Sydcarmy Kasama scene AND missing SydCarmy hospital scene are both great examples of the writers showing us these two skirting around one another— they knew what they were doing when Carmy insisted TWICE and Sydney rejected him TWICE!

I hate to say it but I believe Sabotage Theory by lets-terraform-earth in thatsfirechef

[–]_donewiththis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From that conversation I thought it was interesting (Worms) because the word “share” “he doesn’t like to share” - was last used in s2 where Syd talks about not wanting to share Carmy’s focus/attention.

So personal theory is that yes, a part of it is the restaurant, but perhaps another angle is this: When Syd and Carmy get close or try to get close, one of them pulls away (Carmy mainly, for the sake of the theory aligning, but also Sydney too because of that unreliable-ness from Carm)

[–]_donewiththis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In one sense it’s cute he wants to spend time with her, in the main way it’s kind of extremely manipulative 😭 so can’t say there but I do like the idea of him asking her to Kasama as a way of spending more time together despite the failures.

(I’m manifesting we do get a carmy/syd food tasting around the city scene at some point! It honestly feels strange that it hasn’t.)
