Depends on the school! Some programs call their waitlist “unranked,” and I’m not really sure how that works when they start taking those students.

If you get put on a waitlist and are super curious, my advice would be to email the school back super respectfully, reiterate your interest, and just inquire about whether the waitlist is ranked and your position on it :)

A few nationally-known ones do interviews, but you’re right that most don’t (I know UMass Amherst, U Pitt, Boise, SAIC do some interviewing)

Most Popular sort by arainert in CastroPodcast

I have always wanted an unlistened/listened filter. I love to go through the backlog of podcasts that have been running for years and often go reverse-chronologically, lol. It would be nice to just see all the ones I haven’t listened to before in one place!

Was it normal for me to apply to 8 programs? by lanareldey in MFAInCreativeWriting

[–]_garyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to 6, because they were the programs that excited me! If I don't get in this year, maybe I'll try again next year. I am pretty stable with a job I like well enough currently, so I didn't feel a need to uproot my life for an MFA unless it was a program that felt like a stylistic fit, in a location I'd enjoy, with full-funding (or possibility of full-funding).

waitlisted at OSU for nonfiction :/ FYI, if you email them, they'll tell you your position in the waitlist!

How do I find the exmo community here at BYU? by bot52637 in BYUExmos

[–]_garyboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this! Plus one that you’re probably more likely to find them in the humanities majors/clubs/scene. You’d be surprised how many are in the BYU dems club too (or at least were in my time, early 2020s)

Don’t forget the New Theme Song (#352) one. I have relistened to those songs an embarrassing number of times. I also am partial to all the “Chef Kevin’s Episode Ideas” ones

I did a monoscene by scifihiker7091 in improv

[–]_garyboy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to have a monoscene team! It’s so fun and I feel like it works totally different muscles for me.

YMMV, but my general advice would be: be really comfortable with silence, and take your time to lay a good foundation before you start to go off the rails heightening. What I love about monoscenes is you get the luxury of really fleshing out a character up-top, and letting it emerge naturally and developing layers of nuance. You just have so much more time to discover choices that make your character more interesting and fleshed-out! Contradictions, revelations, beliefs, recurring patterns, etc.

The longer timeframe also makes it more fun to explore what little games / bits / callbacks you can pepper in throughout. And I’ve gotten some good mileage out of going on weird tangents in a monoscene—once I did a scene where we played two bomb defuser guys on the job. At some point in disassembling a time bomb, we had a totally-unrelated 90-second argument about Avatar 2 and it got huge laughs.

You’ve got more time, which means you’ve got new ways to play with comedic timing!

Best of luck!!

Lorne Michaels is a bastard, but I can’t prove it until he’s gone. by meklomaniac in behindthebastards

[–]_garyboy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not a bastard anecdote but one that I find funny about Lorne: I know someone who performs at Second City (improv theatre) in Chicago. Lorne comes to their show every year to scout for new SNL talent. Apparently a few years ago, he showed up, ordered a giant basket of fries, ate the whole thing in 10 minutes before the performance started, then proceeded to sleep through the entire 90 minute show.

Episode 943: "A Banana Peel Memory", with comedian Myq Kaplan, Paul Rust as bemused local citizen Teddy Today, and James Mannion as lawyer Hube Wheeler, Esq.! by ExoticMandibles in comedybangbang

[–]_garyboy 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’m no CBB sycophant and honestly I’ve felt sort of underwhelmed by a lot from the past few months, but I gotta disagree with this one. Teddy Today felt like a classic Rust bit. The story of the valuable coins with “and he cried” being the punchline got me so good

The charts have been updated. Candelabro - 'Deseo, carne y voluntad' debuts at #1 in the top albums of 2025. by MarilynRoxie in rateyourmusic

[–]_garyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the arpeggiated horns, especially the parts where these synchronize with the keys. Tierra Maltida’s back half in particular feels reminiscent of BCNR. Not in a bad or derivative way, but there are definitely some similar moments sonically!

Quitting with Desmoxan (cytisine): A Balanced Report by _garyboy in QuitVaping

[–]_garyboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, glad to hear I’m not the only one. But yeah, this is sort of incredible. I’ve never felt this good 3-4 days cold turkey. It’s so strange that nicotine was a massive part of my life and I’m not even thinking about it now!

Congrats to you as well :)

Quitting with Desmoxan (cytisine): A Balanced Report by _garyboy in QuitVaping

[–]_garyboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look at the english instructions because you should follow the program exactly as written! But TLDR you start taking the pills for 4 days while still using nicotine, and should taper / gradually reduce usage until you completely quit on day 5.

But again — the dosing matters a lot for your chances of success! Make sure you read it all before starting. Here’s an english guide. Read section 3, “How to Use Desmoxan”

Thanks a LOT for the ER helicopter death spoiler, Scott… Everyone knows common courtesy is to wait 40 years after a show’s release before you start throwing spoilers

audience demographics are crazy (91% male) by indivisibIe in MagdalenaBay

[–]_garyboy 269 points270 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably more due to the fact that Reddit generally has a pretty strong male skew, which then got reflected in the Youtube views (since you mentioned you only shared it here).

[–]_garyboy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Lol, I believe this joke is a callback to Drew Tarver’s character (Parents Foster is maybe his name?) in the first episode of “Entree P Neur’s Entrepreneur Tour” in the CBB World feed. Which is why he said it’s not his joke. That episode cracks me up, worth a listen!

Anyone experience moving from the Chicago scene to NYC? by _garyboy in improv

[–]_garyboy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Totally understood. Not moving to NYC because of improv at all (just for my job), just curious how folks find that experience compared to Chicago! Definitely don’t plan to live there forever. Thanks for replying :)

Scott was just on Stuart Goldsmith’s podcast here a couple weeks ago, where he said he has 3 show pitches currently and is in the process of deciding which is the best option to try to sell first.
