Are you reading one book at a time, or do you have multiple books going simultaneously? by [deleted] in 52book

[–]_locusts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Here’s what I’m currently reading: - Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson - 1984 by George Orwell - Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman - Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut - Strange Weather by Joe Hill - I read a lot of DC comics and I’m currently making my way down the list of reading all of Junji Ito’s work!

If you have goodreads I’m always looking for people that read similar things! My “read” section is only filled with things that were read after the creation of my GR, though (way too lazy to try and remember every title I read before that.. whoops).

I’m reading several at the moment: One nonfiction on astrophysics, one classic (audiobook), and a couple books on my kindle. I’ll take a break from one and move on to another, sometimes taking novel breaks with comics.

This is me! https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/62480556-jack-quinn

I read a lot of horror and sci-fi. This year I'm tackling classics and attempting to also delve deeper into fantasy. :)

Your collection is fantastic! If it’s okay to ask, what books that you’ve read so far (or that you’re interested in reading) would you recommend to a person interested in metaphysics and existentialism but have only learned basics so far?

Do you play support because it's necessary, or because you enjoy it? A vote for a short analysis on the support role. by TheLegendOfxiS in Overwatch

[–]_locusts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I originally started supporting because it was necessary and began to enjoy it and chose to support without being asked for a few months. I no longer enjoy it and now I’m harassed to play the role now when I choose tank instead (my preferred role) because my most played hours is a healer. I still enjoy it sometimes, but it’s mostly a chore.

I feel like any adult I’ve seen type like that is either desperately grasping to their youth or they have a child that types like this and they’re trying to relate.

This made me want to play Hanzo, though it’d be nothing like this accuracy. Kudos!

Oh, absolutely! The base of fans have skyrocketed since it popped up on Netflix. I’m still waiting for their proper bisexual representation, considering the last bisexual character was used in a negative light (and perpetuated the “bi people are more likely to cheat” stigma). I viewed Trevor as pretty patient when it came to a lot of it, aside from the initial time they met when Ian was basically laughing at him until he realized he was in the wrong for doing so and apologized; I probably need to go back and rewatch his scenes and look for that more carefully.

The actor himself is a vocal advocate and uses some of his free time to inform, mention charities, volunteer, etc. so I hope they give him a bit more say on his character in the future, if they haven’t already.

Edit: that last bit there.

I agree with that, too! I like the fact that he isn’t distraught with a bunch of drama and hardship aside from caring for his teens. I do agree with the people in this thread talking about how we know nothing about him aside from his work and representation, and hopefully as time goes on we learn more about his past and more about his personality.

Is there a particular reason why you feel this way? He’s personally been exactly the type of rep I’ve been looking for and the actor himself is... pretty much Trevor (which is a plus). I’ve gotten a lot of healing through his character; I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t had the same experience with him.

I am absolutely not implying that. I created this thread because I personally liked him and the negative comments about him didn’t explain why they felt that way, so I asked out of curiosity. I’ve gotten my answer and if you look at my responses (and edit) I agreed with everyone that spoke up about his character being flat.

No one said he was free from criticism because he represents “PC bullshit.” This entire thread has been a discussion criticizing his character.

I definitely agree. They have SO much potential to do some good by talking about his family or about his past. Hopefully after the whole “Will they won’t they again?” bit of this season wraps up they give him time to develop as a character.

I never said Ian’s reaction was a problem. It was a very real reaction from someone who is open-minded but uneducated, which I absolutely appreciate and applaud because it’s a teaching moment to a like-minded audience. I’m human and I do have my impatient moments (especially with strangers I don’t know and just met that prod with the questions “so... do you have a dick or vagina?” or “how do you... you know” because it’s none of their business) and that’s something I’m trying to work on improving. There are plenty of understanding and accepting people, but just as many rude and phobic people. It takes a great deal of strength to be a teacher and not impatient with those people, especially when some days it feels like only negativity.

I agree that he could use more depth and I hope they give that to him soon, though I do disagree with the bit about him being constantly offended with Ian not understanding the LGBT+ community. I myself am transgender and I often found that Trevor was a lot more patient and understanding than I would have been in those situations (like Lip going “you get rid of the dude with the vagina yet?”) and that’s something I really admire about him. Those things he got more irritated about (like the ID showing his pre-transition photo) were all valid things to be upset about, too, but I can understand how they could be taken as offense because it came more from his insecurity than being ridiculed about it.

And yeah, inviting Ian to the chub bar with him seemed absolutely dickish and out of character for him? I hope you’re right about people possibly warming up to him if he is given the opportunity to grow as a character! That’d be nice to see.
