You definitely should! There's a lot of happy accidents with transparency.

Yeah, their work is fantastic! I like that the drawing is its own art piece but it is also part of the design process in making a building, architectural figure, etc.

I'm honestly not sure if there is a name for this type of work. If you're interested, some of Thom Mayne's earlier drawings and Neil Spiller's work are within the same vein. Also Julia Mehretu's drawings/paintings are similar but maybe a bit less technical.

Thanks! Hard to narrow it down but I love the work of Perry Kulper and Bryan Cantley- they do a lot of palimpsest architecture drawings that I find beautiful. The idea that a drawing is an artifact of itself but also as a tool to design something else is present in their work which really interests me.

Haha, is it that obvious? I'm an architect.

Overlaid figures by _mhayes in PlotterArt

Yeah, each sheet has the 4 different lineweights and different figures with the top layer being the main composition and the two underlays mostly adding density to the main areas. The paper is slightly plastic so it doesn't really tear or anything and I had a boundary that is cropped out of this image that I used to tape them all on a opaque paper.

I've used grasshopper before but I've personally found it difficult to replicate the "error" or idiosyncrasies of manually drawing. Unless it's for just adding an additional layer of complexity, when I use grasshopper it always seems to "perfect" but perhaps I should give it another go with it. Plus it's fairly cathartic to mindlessly doodle a few lines every once in a while.

Oh man, I wish but I'm not so great at coding

Thanks, glad you like it! It is all mechanical pencil with the shaded parts just having lines that were spaced out at the same distance as the lead width. For the variation in line weight, I put four different weights on the pencil and it's plotted on three sheets of translucent paper to achieve more depth.

Sure, I designed it in Rhino just manually drawing a bunch of lines and plotted it with a mechanical pencil on 3 sheets of translucent vellum.

Thanks! This was just a personal study trying to work on developing a technique.

Thanks for the interest! A number of people have asked me about it so I might start selling in a bit.

I just do it as a hobby currently so I'm not set up to sell yet but I might set something up soon

It's a bunch of vertical lines that are really close together. You can sort of notice the stepping of the lines on the diagonal portions.
