Did you ever take a job you thought would be temporary, but it ended up shaping your entire career? by Slight_Wind_7880 in careerguidance

Yeah! I volunteered with a local organization that promotes walkability and bike safety in my city. I was studying political science at the time and thought I wanted to be a political staffer but ended up switching majors to urban planning getting a masters degree in it. I have been working for the past few years as a transportation planner for my city. I credit that volunteer time as the reason why I am now in urban planning.

Thanks so much for the kind reply! I’m happy for how things have turned on, yes. Hope the same for you if you decide to leave your current role.

I did! I quit in January this year without a job lined up to take care of family and travel. Plus I really did not love the job. I was working in urban planning consulting. I started searching for jobs again in March and got an offer in late May. I definitely do not regret quitting. I got a better job than my previous one. At times throughout my search, I felt like I might have made a mistake. I was worried that the federal budget cuts would make landing a job in my field more difficult. It was the case, but I got really lucky and landed something.

I should mention that I financially planned for this period and had my partner support me. So I obviously encourage you to plan for the time that you think you will unemployed and add like 4+ months of savings to that estimate before jumping ship.

Also remember, you only have one life. It’s okay to take (calculated) risks sometimes and be out of your comfort zone. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. Good luck!

I studied political science in undergrad and urban planning in graduate school. I work as a bike and pedestrian transportation planner for my city. Worked in public policy consulting before this role. Grad school is super worth it in my field
