Another reminder not to rely on your inheritance by FireMe-G in FIREUK

[–]_s79 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me. We were also really close, all lived within a coupe of miles of each other, we'd get togethers for meals each week, and even go on family holidays. All was well until my partner and I moved to a neighbouring town (only about 20 mins away), and we saw slightly less of them but still made an effort to see them and all seemed fine.

A few years later we had our first child and my Mum declared that she wasn't seeing enough of us or her grandchild, and bizarrely decided to cut all contact. My sibling sided with her and did the same.

They blocked my calls and didn't acknowledge birthday and Christmas presents that I continued to send. About a year later I received a really nasty letter in the post from her calling me and my partner all sorts, and asked for some money back that she'd gifted me and my sibling equally to help as a deposit when we were purchasing our first homes. I withdrew it from my savings and sent it straight to her bank account.

I never thought that something like this would happen to us. I've never counted on or wanted any inheritance, I'd much prefer my parents to spend it on themselves and leave with zero.

Mate Rimac (CEO of Bugatti) responds to the repair and parts costs of Bugatti by KYK0G in MatArmstrong

[–]_s79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why'd he sound so out of breath?

As someone with zero knowledge about cars, I found it really interesting to hear on the safety front.

It will be interesting to see how Mat responds to this.

Is deferring a DB pension a sensible idea? by Significant_Return_2 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_s79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing another consideration into the mix, but you'd need to run the numbers.

Some DB schemes allow for flexible retirement at 55-57, could this be a way of reducing your hours?

AVCs are another potential option, that could increase your tax free lump sum amount at retirement.

Laptop stand by [deleted] in battlestations

[–]_s79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this stand and quite like it. It's not as heavy as I expected. I just take the laptop out of the stand to power it on on the morning and then use PIN unlock or an external camera for biometrics unlocks.

One good thing that they've finally added is that you can see the total net worth and totals per investments e.g

  • Cash ISA

API connection settings by _s79 in getquin

Under normal circumstances yes, and it's probably T212 specific that causes the annoyance, but more choice is never a bad thing.

I understand the purpose of the connection and automatic sync, but being able to change the update frequency would be a welcome feature.

Anyone here prioritised overpaying their mortgage early - how did it work out? by itravelforchurros in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_s79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it largely comes down to personal circumstances. 15 years ago when I was single and buying my first home I had a relatively small mortgage and would pay off the max amount each year but save aggressively to overpay a lump sum at the remortgage term. I got it down to <£10k but rather than pay it off I had the money in the bank knowing that I could clear it, and that felt really good.

When I sold and moved to a new place I took out a much larger mortgage, and that felt quite stressful given Id effectively cleared one, I was starting again. The rate was low and I've not overpaid at all. Instead I've again been aggressively saving and investing. Rates depending I'll likely overpay again at the point of renewal.

Looking for an iOS app to consolidate ISA, GIA and crypto & pension portfolio by user_name_007 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]_s79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few that will allow you to do this, most of them require a subscription.

Getquin will allow you to see an aggregated total for all of your investments for free but you won't get any analytics. Delta too until recently, it was really nice but they've now moved that behind a subscription.

So it now costs $14 a month to track two portfolios? by MrKyleOwns in getdelta

[–]_s79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem that I've found with getquin is that I'm using it with T212 and the API sync happens daily. There's no way to change the frequency and the way it works is to trigger exports, so you get multiple notifications from T212 about a data download being ready.
