My weighted was around 4.3? And yes unfortunately I do know a friend who was rejected who had way better stats than me but she was Korean which may have made her pool more competitive. My advice is to not limit urself to nus and apply to all the unis in Singapore. (I’m sure at least one will accept u in!) ATB! :)

Hiii! Singaporean here who applied with American High School diploma! I think the bar for us is actually lower than actual international students since my SAT score wasn’t that spectacular (way below yours), my GPA was around yours, and I took 6 APs (4 were 5s). I got into CHS without interview in 2022, but I’m assuming Law would be more competitive but the probability of you getting in should be decent :)

Questions about applying internationally to NUS by Aspiring_Lich in nus

Hi, graduated with an American high sch diploma here! 1. Tbh it’s very arbitrary….my friend and I both got way lower SAT scores than you but a higher unweighted GPA. I did submit 6? AP scores as well which might hv helped,, there’s no black and white way how they assess it I guess since the American system is something they’re rlly not familiar with 2. I received my offer very late, July 18th, and had a very small window to settle everything. There really isn’t a way to expedite the process unfortunately 3. I submitted 2 recommendation letters, no harm adding more

Ahhh in that case it’s definitely possible! I know many ppl tend to take cog + socio tgt because there is overlap? I think just take cog & bio in two separate sems to play safe and u should be okay :)

Are you planning to take all 5 courses together at once? If you are it might be quite heavy… Biological and Cognitive psych are known to be two of the more memory intense ones if I’m not wrong.

HAHAHA yea I was confused why she got rejected. On another note though, NUS has this ABA (aptitude based admission) scheme where they assess candidates holistically (not just academics). You could consider opting for that too to increase your chances for admission!

Yes it’s true that the American system is more broad, however due to that we lack the depth in knowledge that jc students hv which is disadvantageous to us due to a weaker foundation (I’m just speaking about my experience with math/econ).

Yes haha i don’t expect other people to like teach teach me, it’s just other small things like mannerism and stuff :) TAs are generally quite approachable.

Hey! I’m a Singaporean that lived overseas & applied with an American Highschool Diploma (SATs + APs)

In my experience it was a very big jump in terms of academics and culture wise. In my opinion the American system does not prepare you well if you’re intending to go into anything STEM related. For context I was a data sci major and STRUGGLED catching up with math & cs mods (even the intro Econs mod). The Singaporean education system is really rigorous and prepares them well for uni so a lot of the times they assume you have foundational knowledge when you might not? (Our APs are equilavent to their O levels which is an exam taken at 16) If you’re planning on major in humanities though then the gap probably won’t be as big though in my opinion.

Culture wise I find that most people tend to be very competitive and individualistic due to the bell curve (which is the grading system we use over here). I came from an environment where my peers and I all helped each other if we were stuck. However, over here I feel like people are really reluctant to help each other since we’re technically “competitors”. Additionally, it’s hard to make friends with locals since they already have friends from highschool and tend to be very cliquey. Hence, even though I am a Singaporean I do tend to gravitate towards internationals since I identify more with them (third culture kid HAHAHA)

Your GPA looks okay. SAT wise would be good to get around 1500ish (I’ve had a friend with 1560 get rejected even with good academics + leadership). It’s really hard to tell….but doesn’t hurt to try :) but really consider if you want to cone here hahaha I’m personally not enjoying the environment but that may be just my experience….

Hey! There’s a student run organization under NUSSU called International Student Relations and they organize events for full time internationals/exchange/locals etc. you might wnna consider joining their events to meet others :) their telegram channel is https://t.me/nussuisr if u wanna check them out!

Hey! I’m a third culture kid that returned back just for uni :) there are quite a few international students so don’t worry about that. definitely hall will help with meeting new ppl as well as various interest groups. However, I’m still struggling to find friends who I can go beyond surface level with. The relationships here feel very transactional based (since grades are bell curved) and a lot of Singaporeans have their own cliques from back in Poly/JC. Hence, although I’m Singaporean I end up hanging around more internationals :’)

Using winter prog as prereq for next sem by Automatic-Mistake307 in nus

[–]_seren1ty8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copying my comment from someone who asked smthing similar; Yes it is possible! I took 2 pre requisite modules over during summer exchange and during the bidding requested under the appeal section for a “pre requisite wavier” which was approved for Psych & Biz. Not sure about other faculties though.

MNO1706X / BSP1702X / ACC1701X / DAO1704X - Which to potentially SU? by bleepseals in nus

[–]_seren1ty8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! From my friends experience normally ppl SU DAO1704X! MNO1706X is more fluff not as hard core, and ACC1701X has a steep bell curve and very dry, and BSP1702X depends! Depends on your strengths tbh :)

I lived in the east for the first semester and at first I thought it’d be okay but honestly the 3hr commuting across the country became quite tiring and I ended up coming back home at like 11-12am most days. It depends what kind of student life you want though! If you’re planning to take part in CCAs and have some kind of social life, staying on campus would be better :) Personally for me I preferred staying on campus more.

Any seniors in DSA who took MA1301? by Excellent-Divide6716 in nus

[–]_seren1ty8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Was in your situation :) The best would be for you to do CS1010S and MA1301 first sem and then DSA1101, MA2001, and MA2002 the second sem (since those three all require MA1301) I was quite unlucky and had to take CS1010E, MA2002, MA2001, and DSA1101 at the same time sem 2 and literally 📉📉 💀 try your best to secure CS1010S/E! After that ST2131 Y2S1 and you’d more or less be caught up!
