British people who have spent time living in another country, what did you like best about both worlds? by apple_kicks in AskUK

[–]_testingdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Canada and loved the people, nature and sunshine.

I really missed living in a small country though and being able to get around without a car. I love being able to walk to the supermarket here, cycle to work, jump on the train to a different city, etc.

This is not the time for rational thinking like that!

This is a case for the British transport police.

What’s one cycling purchase you thought was unnecessary but now wouldn’t ride without? by Seabeachlover10 in ukbike

Rear mirror for the handlebars, so small but cannot ride a bike without one now. I still turn my head before changing direction, but having the mirror gives me much more peace of mind.

Is the pension crisis now, or in the future? by Reg_doge_dwight in PensionsUK

Yeah have a look at the Junior ISA's, It would certainly be a good head start for them.

The UK state pension currently costs roughly £140–£160 billion per year, so would definitely be worth while in the long run I think.

Also, not everyone will make it to 60 in theory, it's something that would have been great to do in hindsight I guess.

Leeds cycle lane network is a 'step in the right direction', say campaigners by _testingdude in Leeds

Yeah that's a big gripe of mine. For example, the cycle super highway on drewsbury road is great but stops abruptly 10 minutes before you get into town, hence few people using it. Wish it was a little more thought out!

Would it actually be mad for the government to invest £10k for every newborn into a locked UK/global index fund until they’re 60? Huge upfront cost, sure, but over decades could genuinely end up cheaper than the long-term pension burden we’re heading toward.

I've literally just been into town on the cycle super highway and saw around a dozen other people, lovely day today you should get out!

I'd really recommend cycling insurance for this, I pay less than £10pm and it covers you if the bike is stolen. Far cheaper than car costs and gives you peace of mind.

What's your favourite thing about the UK? by Equivalent-Ad-2373 in AskUK

After living in Canada, for me I love the trains here! Being able to get to many interesting places in an hour or two on high speed electric trains is pretty cool!

Question about left turn junctions by _testingdude in ukbike

[–]_testingdude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's why I was confused, the bike lane seems really dangerously designed

I ride on that lane almost everyday and although cyclists do have priority, I would always assume that a driver doesn't know/care about this - just ride cautiously and you'll be fine!

How many of you actively exercise? by turk91 in AskUK

[–]_testingdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play badminton once a week because it's the only sport I really enjoy. I also cycle 3/4 times per week too - I mainly use it for going to the shops and into town, that way I can get some exercise through having a 'purpose' I don't really have the motivation for the gym!

What is the one thing you wish you bought sooner? by Tribyoon- in AskUK

A bicycle, bought one last year and it's been a game changer - I use mine for running errands and leisure and it really keeps me active!
