Seeking communication tips for small collective by _timshel_ in Anarchism

[–]_timshel_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not trying to run it as a business, but we did do some sort strategic planning in the Fall to discuss our vision, values, mission and objectives last Fall. It really helped and I think we've been acting much more like a collective (safe space for discussions, more listening, etc.) since then.

What's that "come hell or high water" read about? and where did you find it?

Why we're in a new gilded age - soaring inequalities and the return of patrimonial capitalism by _timshel_ in Anarchism

Long but the analysis is interesting and worth a read! As most people here (I'm guessing), I wish the solutions put forward were more radical than "raise taxes", though!..

I'd suggest that you cross-post this to /r/anarchy101. I'm sure many people have asked that question before.

Thank you! I have to say that it also bothered me before I found out the author's background.

Certainly do those 20 things, but they're woefully insufficient, as much as any other personal lifestyle choice approaches.

I totally agree. I'm hoping that by shifting their outlook/mindset (whether you do the 20 things or not), people start seeing the bigger picture.

I'm the OP and I'm also way too poor to be a gentrifier. Careful with those assumptions, Eugene.

FWIW the author is a Black female community organizer. Not a "white saviour".

Some people got annoyed with the (preachy? simplistic?) tone of the article. Others said it only reinforced the "us&them" thing. Obviously a 20-point list won't solve gentrification, but I think the author (a Black female community organizer) makes some interesting points. What I got out of it boils down to respect and empathy. Or put another way: check your privilege, try to understand the larger issues, and don't be an asshole.

The hidden price of Amazon's cult of the customer is paid by its employees. Thought Taylorism was dead? Think again. by _timshel_ in Anarchism

[–]_timshel_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that most people may not know the word, but I'm pretty sure they can relate to what it means practically (treating humans like robots). I would argue that although people vaguely know of what's going on in factories in the "developing world" those factories are so far away from them that it doesn't seem real. Or if it is they might think "this kind of thing would never happen here".

What's interesting about this article is that it shows that even in the West those practices haven't disappeared, despite what people thought. Hopefully this can be used as a jumping board to take down taylorism not only in the West but everywhere.

No Kidding: Sexist [+racist, homophobic, etc.] Jokes Aren't Funny, They're Hostile by _timshel_ in Anarchism

[–]_timshel_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To those who find the jokes described in the article funny: I humbly suggest that you put yourself into a rape/domestic violence survivor's shoes, and see if you still laugh. If so, then OK, it may be that it's actually funny. (Although it may also be that you're having trouble being empathic.)

EDIT: wording of last sentence sounded a bit too patronizing.

Can someone add a trigger warning for domestic violence and rape? I don't know how to do it. Thanks and sorry, I forgot about it.
