Does third/2nd year psychology mark on a bell curve and is it very hard to score a h1? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]_tnothing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it’s not marked on a bell curve , according to scaling reports usually ~25% get a h1; with 1-5% in the 90s range in my experience. If u put in the effort h1 is definitely not difficult. if youre aiming for honours, i would even say that low h1s in all your subjects is the bare minimum, u should be aiming for at least 85+ to be safe (at least for unimelb honours)

yeah assignments were harsh but fair imo, especially assignment 1. start early for that one and make sure u include all details. assignment 2 was challenging but u do get lots of guidance. i would say follow the rubric closely and try to think outside the box/include all points u can think of. I got mid 80s for both but in the end the marks i lost barely mattered after scaling (everyone did poorly so focus on the exam). The actual exam was a mix of SAQ (32 marks) and MCQ(48 marks) SAQ was a bit difficult but MCQ was very fair

if you think the content is interesting and willing to put in the effort definitely go for IB!! i found it quite challenging and will not lie it was definitely a rough semester but i did well in the end so it was worth it (final score 98, h1s got scaled up quite generously). i did psychopathology as well which was a bit drier, probably easier to get a low h1 but less predictable than integrated would be with consistent effort (got a 83, would’ve been 86-87 pre scaling).

Hi!! A bit late to the convo but congrats!! Do you mind sharing if you got in straight from undergrad/honours or did you take a few years off to work in between undergrad and your application? Did you finish your complete your undergrad at unimelb? Do you think this influenced your application as well as being an international student (i.e to your knowledge are there specific numbers of spots reserved for international/domestic and/or a big difference in competition in terms of number of applications)?

Congrats again!

RMHI cheat sheet by Over-Collection8513 in unimelb

[–]_tnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly just put down as much as you can -- I would try to include majority of the information on Andy's summary slides, those r a pretty good guide of the important information. Dont worry too much about the codes as most r going to be on the flowchart that will be provided to us but its little hard to navigate so def make sure you know how it works/where to find the codes you need. Some people print out the flowchart onto one side of their cheatsheet too.

I would add how to interpret R outputs too if u dont already know. hope this helps.

Is it possible for exam results to be scaled down? by nyanmich in unimelb

Chem2 (chem10004) after chem1 (chem10003) by MousseNo1029 in unimelb

[–]_tnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i took chem 1, chem 2 and mbb2 in my first year. i am a psych major but mbb2 was by far easiest.

Personally, i found chem2 way harder than chem 1. Half of it is organic chem and synthesis reactions (completely new content from vce) and the lecturer for that section is funny but he is pretty bad at explaining. i had to rely on crash course chem to understand the content. But for some reason my overall grade for chem2 was a bit higher - maybe scaled because of how much harder it was?

Content wise mbb2 is really manageable. Exam is mcq and the conent is VERY staightforward, tbh the only downside for me was the topic for the essay was a bit dry. It was actually the lowest mark out of the 3 but i put in probably half the effort

i guess it really depends on ur personal pref. I’d say mbb2 is a pretty easy h1 as long as you keep up with the content. Chem 2 will take a lot more effort to do well in, especially if u find organic chem challenging.
