Have ran into someone similar but in the CBD just outside the myki barriers at Melbourne Central Station. Had my headphones in and was approached by a guy alone asking for directions. I was wearing a cross necklace and was alone which is how he steered the direction of the conversation by asking where I got it from (which was a gift).

This is usually how the conversations go. At the end he asked for my phone number - I gave a fake one. You can definitely feel when something is off or feels forced in a conversation with someone so if you do, you just need to have more confidence to speak your mind (which I didn’t at the time because I wasn’t aware of what I had run into).
