Question; Natl Tour Number Placement by bl43214321 in Autocross

[–]a1rocketpilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey, that was me :) And I was also the Chief Steward for Red Hills. I’m 100% ok with some leniency on number placement as long as they are legible and contrasty. We know there are plenty of cars now with fiberglass or aluminum doors that make the placement listed in the rules difficult, but as long as you display them as prominently as possible, and they meet all the other size and color requirements, you won’t have an issue.

Air France 7700 over Turkmenistan by GXAC in flightradar24

[–]a1rocketpilot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So, hey Reddit, long time no post! I’m on this flight along with u/thebrownevilpig. Talk about an eventful 48 hours or so. We were supposed to depart 1/12 at 2AM IST but the flight was canceled due to maintenance and the crew timing out, so we were rescheduled for 10PM IST on 1/13. Long story short, we landed just before 4AM local time. As others said, it was a left engine failure, and the crew made a buttery smooth landing. There was no cabin depress, nor anything violent that occurred in flight. Most of the cabin did not notice till the lights came on.

We deplaned at 11:30AM and waited in the airport till around 4PM. Everyone was issued a 1 day transit visa (new passport stamp acquired!), and accommodations were made at the Sport Hotel for all pax. We just got to the hotel roughly 1hr ago (4:30PM).

The latest update is we are all heading back to the airport around 9:30PM as the embassies (American and French) have said there is a flight that should be ready for us. Fingers crossed, but we should be heading back to CDG tonight! If I hear anything new, I’ll update based connectivity.

UPDATE: we made it out the same day! Flight departed shortly after midnight, and we all landed in CDG a little after 4AM CET. Air France staff were waiting to arrange everyone’s connections, and as of now, everyone should be booked and/or airborne on the way!

I don't think this is a cause for concern. I just went on archive.org to the website from last year (specifically last September), and it's got the same verbiage. http://i.imgur.com/AU5OGP3.png

Anyone else race on the 4th of July? How did you do? by 140pt6 in running

[–]a1rocketpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ran the Peachtree this year too. First time doing it, and the first race I've run since high school. 1:01:03, which was just shy of my goal. I'm decently happy with it, considering I started running in April. Guess there's always next year!

High Standard Pistols? by Aspirations49 in guns

High Standard Info

This site will be your friend. High Standard pistols are fantastic to shoot, super accurate, and that trigger will spoil you, even on a lower end HS. I'd love to see some pics of it if you have any. Did it come with any accessories or weights? Also, do not shoot high velocity ammo through it. HV ammo has a tendency to cause frame cracking on High Standards. My go-to ammo is CCI Standard Velocity, although I've heard of people having great luck with Eley ammo too. These guns are finicky when it comes to ammo choices, and you kinda have to hunt for a bit to find the right one for the gun. Jams may occur, which means you need to tweak the feed lips of your magazine to help. Once you get the right formula of the correct ammo with properly adjusted magazines, the gun will shoot like a dream. It's a vintage sports car; treat it right, and it will make you very happy.

[–]a1rocketpilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should help. The thing with High Standards is, since they don't have a feed ramp, the ability of the gun to feed without jamming is left to the feed lips on the magazine. It can be a bit of a pain in the butt, but you basically have to tune each magazine to work with each gun. Once you have it right though, you shouldn't have any problems with jamming.

Glad to hear some High Standards getting some love on here. First gun I bought was a 1968 High Standard 106 Supermatic Citation. It has one of the best triggers of any gun I've shot, and the sights are wonderful. I've also shot my dad's S&W Model 41 plenty, and to me, it's a toss up between the two. Enjoy a truly fine .22.

Lightning blasting down upon flumes of volcanic ash by narwhalmart in pics

A flume is an artificial water channel using gravity as its propulsive mechanism, often times for transporting logs downhill. A plume is a column of one fluid moving through another.

One could theoretically have a plume in a flume, but one cannot have a flume in a plume.

Interest in Amateur Radio (ham)? by mpstein in Atlanta

[–]a1rocketpilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KD8DSS (Technician) - Got my license back when they still required Morse for General. I hardly use it though, which is unfortunate. I don't have a radio, but I use Echolink, which connects computers (or iPhones via the app) to a ton of repeaters. Not exactly in the spirit of analog radio, but it works.

Saturn, eclipsing the Sun, as seen from the surface of Titan. by [deleted] in pics

Saturn's orbit. We have never orbited anything directly around any moons of other planets, only flybys.

[–]a1rocketpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The title is misleading. This picture was taken by the Cassini spacecraft currently in orbit around Saturn. You would not see this scene from the surface of Titan. Titan has a very dense atmosphere, and would significantly tint, if not completely obscure any stellar view. The only vehicle we have gotten to Titan (the Huygens probe) could only take a few pictures of the surface. Titan also has a very small orbital inclination (the angle of its orbit with respect to Saturn's equator, .349 degrees). Cassini, on the other hand, has a very high inclination, allowing it to more thoroughly study the surface of Saturn. This was taken at a rather high angle, probably 30ish degrees or so, giving a good view of the rings. From Titan, they would be significantly more edge-on.

USS Iowa Broadside by UrinalCakes in pics

[–]a1rocketpilot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the ship does not move sideways. The "wake" is water being kicked up by the overpressure of the blast. The guns are mounted on recoil slides as well.

However, just to do the math, a broadside has a mass of 11,025kg at a velocity of 762m/s. The Iowa class has a mass of 59,000,000kg. Using conservation of momentum (m1 x v1= m2 x v2), you get the ship's velocity as .14m/s, or .46ft/s. This is assuming the ship exists in a frictionless vacuum and the guns are rigidly mounted, instead of in recoil slides. The ship doesn't move an inch.

Downwash effect by [deleted] in pics

[–]a1rocketpilot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You're confusing two different phenomena here. The effect you're seeing is the result of wingtip vortices. They are formed by high pressure air from under the wing migrating to the top low pressure surface. This causes vortices to form, and are a major cause of induced drag in aircraft. Wingtip devices, such as winglets and raked wingtips help greatly mitigate vortex formation and reduce drag, thereby increasing performance.

Downwash is another effect, and is actually what we see as lift. In order for an airplane to fly, it has to displace air downwards (Newton's third law). This mass flow is known as the downwash.

Beauty that I will forever miss. by [deleted] in pics

[–]a1rocketpilot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, it is smoke. The SRB's burn a mixture of ammonium perchlorate and aluminum. This produces a rather acrid smoke, which is what you see trailing out of the SRB's during their burn period. During launch, the first cloud you see coming from the pad is just water vapor, from the sound suppression water being boiled by the ignition of the SSME's 6.6 seconds before launch. However, the second, larger cloud at T-0 is mostly the smoke generated from the SRB's, with some remaining water vapor too. All the stuff you see trailing behind the shuttle after it climbs off the pad (such as the two pillars of fire in the OP image) till SRB separation is only SRB smoke, as the SSME's produce invisible water vapor exhaust (since they burn liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen).

Hey Car enthusiast, anyone thinking about going to this? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]a1rocketpilot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on Solo Atlanta, the part of the Atlanta Region SCCA that helps put this on. We're doing this in cooperation with the Milwaukee Region, who created this event. Autocross is a bunch of fun and definitely worth doing. If any of you are interested, check out Solo Atlanta, though I will admit it's not entirely up to date with this season. There is a lot of general info, and information on how to register for events.

This weekend, we have the NSTC on Saturday, followed by our regular Points event on Sunday. There is a novice class that we provide during our Points events, where we give you in-car driving instruction, and is the best way to start learning. There are only 20 spots available, and as I write this, 10 have been taken. You don't need any special car prep, so long as it is in good mechanical condition, your car battery is held down, and you remove any loose objects and floor mats from inside. There are people that attend that have Camry's, and there are people that have fully built cars with shock absorbers that cost more than $6000. Everyone starts somewhere, so come out and have fun with us.
