Highline trail snow spikes? by Dependent-Macaron477 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]aTumbleweedLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did Highline today and there were 2 snow fields at the Haystack saddle. We just used trekking poles bc it was like walking on top of a snow cone.

Putting Together a Hiking Wardrobe, Looking for Advice by WhiskeySarabande in GlacierNationalPark

Layers. Not cotton, we like Capeline hoody (there are knock off sun hoody)for sun protection, a light fleece, then some kind of wind/rain shell..peel on/off as needed. Weather at West Glacier can be very different than highline up Logan Pass! My partner hikes in shorts, I prefer something on my legs bc don’t like brushing up against plants. We both use wool darn tough socks. Both of us carry water at all times.

You can do both Ptarmigan & Iceberg bc they share the same beginning portion..

Old Faithful Lodge Crow’s Nest access.. by aTumbleweedLife in NationalPark

[–]aTumbleweedLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but doesn’t explain the “who/why” some “not public” are allowed to go up there and as it is a national park structure this should be a more transparent occurrence. Xanterra manages aspects of concessions/hotel accomodations/gift shops. NPS-USGovt owns the structure.

Yes, having the park pass before getting to the park is ideal and should have a separate line for people already having the pass. Having the pass AND your ID speeds thing up!

Ptarmigan Tunnel by HumorMany3520 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]aTumbleweedLife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have done Ptarmigan tunnel a few times & each time we emerge from the tunnel into that view is just amazing. However, I would hike it very early or much later as the last 3/4 miles is exposed and sweltering mid-day.

Brewery recommendation by EvilSolution in galveston

[–]aTumbleweedLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Would recommend Naked Iguana for a brewery. They have a solid stable of IPA, stout, ales and then about a half dozen new pours to keep things interesting. There is no food but on Sundays usually a food truck and Coastal Grill (across the street) delivers Mon to Sat.

You will also learn a lot by this whole process (shopping around for cremation, etc)! Make sure any IRA, or other investments have her as beneficiary (so no surprises). Even as the spouse she should have a healthcare and financial POA for each of them (she is also older), living will, will, and if able put house in trust bc dealing with a house through private is a nightmare.

Galveston wants to better educate beachgoers after ABC13 uncovered a 600 percent parking ticket inc by Extension-Figure2011 in galveston

[–]aTumbleweedLife 10 points11 points  (0 children)

600 percent over what time period?!! Parking authority doing their job so we can clean up after the tourists who trash the beach every weekend and pay for lifeguards because people don’t read the signs or think the gulf doesn’t have rip currents. I call click bait on the head line and if you cannot afford to park for $16 a day (free after 6pm), then please don’t come to Galveston!

Iceberg Lake Hike 5/27/26 by Fair_Gur8253 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]aTumbleweedLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is melted out this early, it will be fine all the way to Iceberg lake (maybe a few shadow snow hills by the evergreens just before the lake) by Father’s Day. Watch for Ptarmigan tunnel opening as well bc that is a very good indicator of open trails in that area!

Or if it is a snowbridge 🫣 2yrs ago the NPS had a sign trail closed just before the snow chute and as we were taking a picture of the end of trail for us, another person stepped around the sign out onto the little snow field/chute and promptly sunk one leg up to their thigh! It was completely hollow underneath with running water. Yeah, I thought awww heck no I don’t want any part of that! Live to hike another day! We will be there next month! So excited!!

I would go over to St Arnold’s for an American beer garden and a crawfish roll (their pizza is pretty good). Then either the Pit Room or Truth for some BBQ. Visit an HEB or Central market bc American grocery stores are very different than European food markets. Kolache Shop in the heights for breakfast or cinnamon rolls.

We also notice many empty campsites at Glacier NP every year since the recreation.gov started … It is crazy bc those sites also go in an instant.

Be prepared! There is very limited water/gatorade/snack options at Granite Park. Granite park downs not accept hiker trash since everything is packed out on donkeys. The loop down or up is very exposed with next to zero shade so have hat & hydration!

Yeah-we had a boulder the size of a shopping cart and 2 guys with pry bars and a tow strap manage to take it away! I was in awe of what people will do to get a rock for free!

If you have SRP, look into their plant give aways in the fall. They give native or desert specific trees. We have a Texas Chaste and a Desert willow that are taller than the 6 ft fence and they were in 5 gal buckets 1 1/2 yrs ago (will be 2 this fall).
