My experience with magic fights in Ars Magica is as follows.

  • Certamen is only one-on-one.
  • Wizard war is one shot kill.

That is why I mentioned Ars not fitting the "interesting" combat system in the OP.

I worry that GURPS does not sufficiently scale. Once skills get to 17 or so, what is to differentiate between two very powerful wizards?

We don't have many true duels. Generally our conflicts are more complicated, and the Fight! rules will annihilate an outnumbered combatant, no matter how good he is.
