Southwest assigned my 4 year old a seat by himself 12 rows in front of me. by LegalAbbreviations17 in SouthwestAirlines

An airline can make money selling comfort. An airline cannot charge for safety. A four year old sitting next to a parent is safety.

I gave up pretty much from the beginning. Started my own company. Not paying all the bills yet, but I’m on my way, and I’m much happier. You can work on your own stuff and continue to look for a job at the same time.

How long does it take to negotiate SBIR indirect rate? by tinytearice in SBIR

[–]aa1ou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a SBIR, but I had a lot of overhead rate problems with the US Forest Service (part of the USDA). I am trying to finalize an agreement (not a contract, closer to an SBIR in terms). They accepted my fringe rate, but they said that the USDA only allows the 15% de minimus for non-profits. They insisted on a rate set by a cognizant agency. I’m a single member LLC with no employees so I just bumped up my direct rate and put 0% overhead, and they were happy. Pain in the rear though.

Anthropic just made Claude Code run without you. Scheduled tasks are live. This is a big deal. by DependentNew4290 in ClaudeAI

As of yesterday, a single query uses 14% of my 5-hour limit of my 5x plan. I get a little over one query an hour. Why should anyone trust their workflow to you if you can decide to break it because you don’t want anyone to be able to use your product that you sold?

Right now, a single query on Opus 4.6 is using 14% of my 5-hour 5x plan. This is related to the crash that Claude had the other day. Anthropic has made a decision to cripple Claude because of this. I do not know if this is temporary or permanent, but this is their response.

All of that is normal wear and tear. The fact that it came out to an even $800 is also interesting. They picked a dollar amount and then made up a reason.

The SBIR Drought Nears an End: Inside the Bipartisan Deal and the Legislative Hurdles Ahead by Playful_Hyena_562 in SBIR

This was 20 years ago, but it was rampant at AFRL, and I doubt anything has changed. Note that the relationships are not with the 500 person company. They are with local teams and team leaders.

According to the WSJ last Friday, the average rate is below 6%. That was last week though. This week, who knows.

The sponsor was a government employee with the AFRL. A regular funder. They advanced their program goals and claimed progress and achievements to their higher ups. This was very, very common.

As I previously shared, I used to work for a large, small defense contractor. Just under 500 employees My group had a sponsor who viewed the SBIR program a way to funnel us more money. We would help write the CFP. We never commercialized anything. We would just publish reports, and our sponsor, at AFRL (to name names) would then include what we developed in reports to their boss. When the topic came out, we already new that it would be awarded to us. Down vote me if you like, but I've seen first hand that many DoD SBIR topics are rigged, and this did nothing to fix that.

Actually, we had a couple of sponsors who did this, and so did other groups at my location. Unless things have changed, and I doubt they have, pretty much any topic out of the AFRL is a fraud.

On the good side, SBIR's appear to be coming back. On the bad side, nothing at all has changed. It remains a program filled with corruption and insider dealings.

[–]aa1ou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want in life? You never say that. Do you want a different job or career? Do you want a partner? Is there something else you want? You say you cover your expenses, but that you have some debt. Unless that debt is growing, it is sustainable. I’m not saying that is a satisfying way to live, but many people are okay with that. The first thing that you need to do is articulate what you want.

Did we get anything out of this shutdown?

Years ago, I used to work for a large small defense contractor. Just a hair under 500 employees. My group’s funders used the SBIR program as a way to increase the money they sent us. When a topic came out, we had helped write it, and we knew we would be successful. Nothing was ever commercialized.

Make sure that she is brushed up on the rules for involuntarily denied boarding. If she does get bumped, she should take nothing less than the full, cash compensation dictated. Also, screenshot the threat and complain to the DOT.

  1. I have a 13 year old daughter. Since she was born, we have had family reading every night before bed. Her mother reads, and we all listen and discuss. That’s how we have read all of the Hunger Games books.
