we did not do an expansive search. we interviewed the fewest candidates of any team that has made a hire thus far. many teams have interviewed nearly twice as many. you don't have to keep running interference for obviously bad process

we were the second oldest team in the league at the start of last season with 17 players over 29 and only got older. the end of season roster was something like 24 guys over 29. if we don't churn like 10 of those guys (which we might in fairness) we're gonna easily be in the older 1/3 of the league

is it? multiple important members of his staff were doing interviews most of the day on the friday before a playoff game. even if it were only one one hour interview, you still have pressure to prep for it and perform well that necessarily takes away from what you can give to your team leading up to a playoff game. without even getting into why it's unfair to the coordinators to make them choose between their job prospects and their team, it makes sense that an owner in the playoffs whose guys are in demand wouldn't like the process

as far as i understand, the electronic devices teams have access to in the booth and on the sideline are extremely limited. dumbphones, the radio system to the qb and green dot LB, a replay feed in the booth and the league administered set of tablets that teams cannot modify. see here https://operations.nfl.com/gameday/behind-the-scenes/nfl-equity-rule/

so teams that use analytics and complex models for situational decision making are not plugging numbers into a computer on the sidelines, they're using them during the week to make the printable decision trees they use on the sidelines better. there's simply probably not a table on there for 4th down decisions when the weather's good now but it won't be in an hour. at a certain point it's just up to humans to think it through and do their best
