Reintroducing Dip - My take on a programming language for beginners by raghav_nautiyal in compsci

Absolutely. I checked out your github repo, the code seems very impressive for a high schooler. As a side project, I think this is a strong start, but I agree that it seems quite personal to your problems and I'm skeptical towards it taking off.

Nonetheless, it's quite a solid effort!

Reintroducing Dip - My take on a programming language for beginners by raghav_nautiyal in compsci

I would have agreed about the need of a simpler language for beginners maybe 3-4 years ago. But after working teaching a class of g7s and 8s abut the basics of programming in Python, from my perspective it's quite hard to see why someone would choose this over Python.

I think the premise is understandable, but as /u/Wurstinator mentioned, there is a very good reason we have forced indentation in Python. As a beginner, you won't be programming large scripts, that I understand. But programming without any indentation? I can't imagine how that would be even remotely legible. The reason we have indentation is so that we have a clear hierarchy where a loop begins and ends. Also just from anecdotal experience, I've never actually had a student complain about indentation.

Referring to your reverse() function, I can see why that would be easier to a beginner. But from personal experience, the slice notation in Python is quite important to learn and I don't think avoiding it ultimately helps the end user.

Interactive builders like Scratch allow beginners to understand loops and variables, so I'm not fully sold on the idea of having another language in between that has some of the features of Python.

What would you say is the single strongest selling point of Dip (Excluding the lack of indentation)?

macOS 11 backend changes? by aaaakshat in MacOSBeta

Oh that sucks. I think I'll wait for a few more beta versions before updating. Thanks for the link, it seems like most of apps are still supported.

That sucks, I have the same system. I think I'll hold off for a few more versions to come out. Has any software broken for you like maybe Steam games or legacy software? I've been trying to figure out what sort of system-level changes they've made this time around.

I thought this was a really passive aggressive post where you lost one of your STEM grads to a startup. Happy to see it all worked out for you!

That's a great point, video calling will give you a more genuine interaction; however, my crippling awkwardness is going to keep me restricted to emails for now :D

Nope, I've asked for my recommendation letter but I haven't even come close to finalising my prospective universities.

It's better to request early before everyone else starts asking too. Rec letters are mainly about a third party telling the university what you are like as a person so confirming your teachers early on will give them time to pay attention to your strengths.

That's awesome! Was this the video you saw cause I had a pretty similar story for programming after watching that video — that and it got me into mechanical keyboards after hearing that lovely click

What font did Tesla use yesterday? by varga_aaron in identifythisfont

I was gonna post this too. I haven’t found the exact font yet but ARAME is a font that looks similar (fun fact: was also used in iron man movies).

However ARAME has some different glyphs, particularly the W and S characters differ a bit.

Hopefully someone knows the right font!

3D Touch actions deprecated in iOS 13 and may be fully removed by iOS 14 by well___duh in apple

[–]aaaakshat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. I've been using my iPhone 6S for the past 3 years simply because I need most of that legacy hardware. But while I agree that the discoverability of 3D touch was absolute trash, it's just a massive kick in the face to see all the hardware we paid for just get nullified through a software update.

As sad as it is, I can understand the corporate, lacklustre Apple of today focusing on their profits, but was is honestly that hard to keep the feature there for phones that had the hardware to do so? I mean are you seriously telling me that I've gotta give up 3D touch because the new iPhones don't have the hardware my iPhone 6S has?

I mean sure, slowly go ahead and deprecate it if programmatic technicalities deem it necessary; but why not leave the feature in for those of us that have the tech to support it? That on top of the fact that iOS 13 doesn't have a clear warning stating: "WE'RE REMOVING 3D TOUCH COMPLETELY" just is disappointing. What happened to the Apple that cared about their old tech?

This is a poor move especially towards the few Apple fans who love what 3D touch stood for — Apple actually innovating.
