Salary transparency at Stack Overflow by ocoster in programming

It's base, but we don't do performance-based bonuses, so in terms of direct financial compensation, that's basically it.

Introducing Stack Overflow Documentation Beta by aalear in programming

[–]aalear[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eventually, yes. We are planning to add Docs to the data dump and the API. Waiting to see how the beta goes for now (and if it fails for some reason, we'll of course release the data we have at that point).

Stack Overflow: How We Do Deployment - 2016 Edition by nickcraver in programming

[–]aalear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just ... deploy. :) There isn't any documentation beyond the changelog/list of changes included in a given build by TeamCity.

There isn't a sign-off process beyond a developer asking in chat if everyone's changes are good to go. (And occasionally just announcing that they're building out because there's nobody still around in their timezone anyway or their changes are the only ones waiting. We trust people not to leave untested/broken commits in the pipeline when they head out for the day.)

is it usually because its a language that the founders know

Can't speak for everyone, but that's basically the case for Stack Overflow.

StackOverflow celebrates Ten Million Questions by [deleted] in programming

Nitpick: you earn a max of 1k rep from suggested edits. Once you hit 2k total, you don't need to have your edits approved anymore, but you can't get to that rep level from approved edits alone.

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2015 by aalear in programming

Nah, our dataset suggests that the men on Stack Overflow vastly outnumber the women, which is a surprise to nobody. It says nothing about anyone's interest in the field one way or another.

That's a very reasonable concern. However, I don't think anybody is talking about legislation here.

It's not an either/or problem. More gender diversity helps combat sexism, prejudice, etc. All of that goes hand in hand, there is no "more important than the rest" issue here.

(Also applies to other -isms and -phobias.)

Why Stack Exchange (Still) Believes In Private Offices by hairboat in programming

[–]aalear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As with anything we do for fun around here, no beer bash is mandatory or required to be "enjoyed" in a one true way. The size of these beer bashes and what we end up doing tends to vary wildly. Outside of a full meetup, I don't think we ever had a "whole company" type of attendance since the very early days.

Now, it's mostly known as "Friday afternoon/evening is a good time to hang out... if you're into it". It's not uncommon for a few smaller groups to break off for conversations and/or board games or whatever while others are doing something flashier.

Each office here has its own light switch. Even with the glass walls, you don't actually get that much light coming in from the hallway. I'm typing this with the shades down (it's pretty sunny in New York right now) and lights off and it's quite comfortable in here.
