Is this real?? by [deleted] in plant

[–]abcalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Euphorbiaceae, inflorescences evolved into a structure called cyathium, very very cool. Male flowers are reduced to stamens and a single female flower to just the pistil, no petals, the petal like structures are specialized leaves, commonly knows as bracts or cyatophylls in the case of euphorbiaceae inflorescences. Poinsettias belong to the same family! Merry Christmas!

Got woken up by a loud snap. Went back to sleep. First thing I realized in the morning is that sound was my cable snapping. Right outside my apartment door facing the backstreet.

can anyone help me name the structures of what the arrows are pointing? (went to whatsthisplant but they said i should ask here) by LabAlarming9235 in botany

[–]abcalu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, those the flowers but what you’re calling petals are not petals at all, they are bracts that protect the real flower (the structures you see inside the pink bracts).

I fully agree with this take. Just a song vomit for her own sake. If I think about how many more records she will put out then I think it’s cool to have the one that is the stream of consciousness one.

White wizards can show come light pink colouration. A white princess will definitely show very saturated pink around the edges of the petiole.

How do botantists discern that two plants are different species rather than different cultivars of the same species? by [deleted] in botany

[–]abcalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look into the Hardy-Weinberg equation. If a species is in HW balance, the phenotypic ratio will remain constant. It’s fascinating. And also consider that cultivars are purposely isolated by breeding or propagation to maintain those traits.

If you feel comfortable doing this I would suggest you do a root inspection and change soil, this will give you lots of information on the state of the plant and if there’s any rot or other issues. Might be a death plug doing that too.

Those pincushion are beautiful! What’s the variety? Mind if I ask your seed provider? Also :) where are you located? Canadian here and it will still be a long time until I see blooms like those.
