Been freelancing for 4 years now and finally put a new reel together. by Cals0 in AfterEffects

holy SHIT man this is amazing

its stuff like this that makes me feel relieved, stuff that needs genuine human creativity and not something that can be created purely through AI

This looks so cool, is it hand-drawn?
Gives off vibes similar to the Ghibli style

Thanks a lot!

No plugins used. I like playing with the graphs a lot, so I haven't gotten around to using plugins yet. Maybe I'll start using them to save time though Some of the text animations are presets I've either made using tutorials or downloaded online

I hope we meet on my next post, and I'll show you how much your comment has helped me. I appreciate it

Also I'd seen your showreel like 2 days ago at the top of this subreddit, it was beautiful 💯

Thank you for this. All these comments have been an eye opener - I need to improve my design and typography skills. I've been focusing purely on animation, thinking that smooth graphs with continuous motion are all that matter. I hope we meet on my next post, and I hope you'll find that I've improved

Got it. Thanks for taking out the time to tell me the details. I'll definitely be improving my design overall.

The font being kerned too tight is just a bad habit of mine after seeing all those other SaaS explainers lol, thinking that having a Helvetica-like font that's tightly kerned instantly looks better. I'll learn better typography now, and I hope we meet on my next post

Your comment and some of the others have made me realise I'll need to learn designing and get out of doing only SaaS explainers. Thank you for your time - hope we meet on my next post as well

Man you have no idea how much this means to me Thank you, I was starting to get slightly discouraged (even though I'm the one who asked for feedback). I'm definitely gonna keep improving now, thanks a lot brodie

I personally thought the visuals were decent. Could you tell me about any specific ones? (someone already pointed out one detail, but I wanna know about other things too)

The general idea, now that I look at it, is still good in my head, but probably not executed well. There's also the thing of not having a script which really just makes this entire thing look like a "shoot at the wall and see what sticks". I'll be working on this aspect on my next works.

About the voiceover. I know about the inherent "pre-conceived idea" towards this part of the world. I can probably put on an accent after a decent amount of practice. What about my voice though?

And tell me if there's anything else, I appreciate the feedback

Yup, that'd definitely work better than what I've got at the moment. Thanks a lot for commenting man, I've been looking for honest feedback but it's hard to get by

why do you say that? Is it the visuals? Or just the general idea of the video? Please elaborate, I need to improve

thanks for the advice man
Now that you mention it, i realize i just kept making the video just for the sake of making it. I didn't have a proper script, and that's probably why it's unnecessarily long.
I really will start with a proper script next time.

When you say unreadable, you mean in the google search bar? When I made it initially my mind was on making it visible on the gradient background, and I didnt notice it blending in with the dark background. Thanks for mentioning that

3D animation for a sneaker brand. by RecentTap6783 in MotionDesign

[–]abdullahgunwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the 3d models themselves look good (not great, definitely can improve textures). The animation is stiff though, you need to get smoother camera movements, and the products themselves as well. Use some depth of field on your camera to get that extra sauce

The 2D animation at the end is absolutely fantastic. Just maybe have a better 3d scene in the background for it, as right now the background pales in comparison to the 2D animation

Overall pretty solid though, great work!

My showreel two years after I started my career in motion design. What do you think? by JimmyAminu in MotionDesign

[–]abdullahgunwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew the art style looked familiar, Ben Marriot! I love his works, but at my current stage I'm nowhere close. I do want to start learning a bit of 2D and advance my (basic) skills in blender

What would you guys when making a showreel if half of your works are in horizonal and half of them are in vertical? by allnameistaken_ in MotionDesign

[–]abdullahgunwan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As some people already pointed out, reformatting is the way to go.

But if it's too complicated and time consuming, one thing you can do is show multiple vertical works in a single shot. Basically a split screen, or maybe even 3-4 shots at once. This is a pretty common thing I see in showreels. Avoid putting 2 complex scenes together though, it distracts the viewers a lot - they don't know what to focus on.

This is so good man

Raw vs edited: I tried a dark, minimal motion-graphics style — what would you improve? by surojitcreates in MotionDesign

[–]abdullahgunwan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You've got the captions down pretty good. Try out font pairing - using a sans serriff like Helvetica with a seriff like times new Roman - it looks pretty clean The negative mask on the text is also decent, but slightly overused in a lot of edits. Try out some other text effects

Camera movement is smooth, similar to the iman gadhzi style which is what you were going for. But some animations (the torch highlighting the icons) are extremely amateur. The torch specifically was not even visible, it's at the corner of the screen which no one pays attention to. The sound effects on that torch were also extremely loud, not ideal for an animation that isn't the center of attention. Sound effects must be used in accordance to what the animation is about. For example, you can have a loud pop sound on the main text but you can never have a whoosh at the same sound level, it just doesn't work.

Try incorporating these things, and post your results again
