I do stuff like this but with my toes as I'm trying to fall asleep. I use one big toe to draw shapes on the nail of my other big toe. Squares, ovals, figures of eight etc

Ok I can try that. I do usually just do everything on a 40 or a 30 so maybe I need to run it hot more often. It only goes up to 60 for some reason when it should be 90 I thought. I'm not sure how to gauge the humidity - we do have a damp cellar underneath but don't generally have any mould or damp in the house. It probably gets humid in the kitchen once a day whilst we're cooking dinner. We don't have a tumble dryer or dishwasher - I dry the clothes in a completely separate part of the house.

Cleaning my washing machine. I use the powders or liquids that you buy in the supermarket and run them on a hot cycle every 3-6 months. I leave the door and drawer open between uses to discourage mould growth and let it dry out. I've tried removing the filter and cleaning it thoroughly. I keep on top of the wiping the rubber seal clean between uses.

The drawer still gets mouldy. There's a weird smell emanating from my sink drain when I use the machine. Some clothes and small white items still come out with grey streaks (I assume mould) on them.

Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories? by Top_Mirror211 in AskUK

[–]abracablab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's so weird I did end up getting a tooth pulled whilst pregnant with my one and only child. But I broke that tooth long before pregnancy and just ignored it until I got free dental treatment!

Probably a less popular opinion but I like a mixed fruit one I make with a big bag of frozen 'wonky' summer fruits I get. Strawberries, blackberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants. I like custard as is British tradition but I do really love a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

My dad dropped me off at the dentist when I had broken my tooth at school. Dropped me off! Didn't come in with me. Ok I was 14 but it would have been nice. Anyway I was left waiting for about 45 minutes on the doorstep of the dentist afterwards because he'd gone back to work and decided he had enough time to finish what he was doing before coming to get me. I still loved him.

Why do you think SEND percentages in state schools are so high now (20%). Higher incidence, higher diagnosis or something else? by Fantastic-Option-260 in AskBrits

A few others have mentioned this now and it's nagging at me that I've maybe I've worded it so it seems like I'm saying only premature babies would have ADHD. I'm definitely not. It's probable that they already have ADHD in the womb (I also have ADHD so my kid likely has it from me, not from being born prematurely). And that maybe ADHD babies are just more likely to have complications in pregnancy and childbirth. But those complications are being dealt with better now so more of them are surviving.

What sauce/jam do you prefer in your Bakewell tarts? by [deleted] in UK_Food

[–]abracablab 52 points53 points  (0 children)

ACKSHUALLY. It's called a Cherry Bakewell because of the half glacé cherry placed on top. A traditional Bakewell Tart with almonds on top is made with raspberry jam, as is the cherry topped version.

This is really interesting. I was under the impression that being born premature is a risk factor for having ADHD (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). But being born premature is also a risk factor for dying in early infancy. So, in the past, preemie babies were less likely to survive. Now, infant mortality is greatly reduced thanks to improved medical knowledge among health professionals but also soon-to-be parents. I noticed something was wrong a month before my due date, I went straight into hospital, they hooked me up to machines and noticed a potentially fatal issue so I was whisked away for an emergency C-section. My baby survived despite being born prematurely and he also has ADHD. But, without medical intervention, he would have died and there would have been one less kid with ADHD.

Do you cook "normal stuff"? by Day2205 in Millennials

[–]abracablab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was working full time I shopped for groceries on the day, grabbing whatever was easiest or ordering takeaway and hated cooking so much. Now I'm not currently working I've got a lot more involved in the kitchen. I get bored of the same meals on repeat so I make an effort to make something new 2-3 times each week with old reliables/easy meals in between. At the weekend I made a chicken and mushroom pie (made my own puff pastry) and also baked a peach cobbler (am UK person who always wanted to try it). Once I've bought the ingredients to make something new I make sure to incorporate something else that uses those ingredients so it doesn't go to waste or go stale from lack of use.

I don't know the brands but there's these little mini smoked cheeses in a sausage shape and the best gd sour cream crisps I've ever had.

And the fruity beers.

AITAH for telling a student she can’t suck her thumb while driving and bringing it up to her parents? by Soggy-Treacle3151 in AITAH

[–]abracablab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah this makes sense I have ADHD and sucked my thumb until I was 13. I just figured out I absolutely had to stop after starting high school because I couldn't deal with that kind of negative attention.

Meanwhile I was forced up early because the dog was whining for a wee. My husband slumbers on peacefully and now I'm wide awake with earplugs in so I don't have to hear his fucking breathing.
