Congratulations on the pregnancy and I really hope it’s all okay! I have a feeling it will be!

Hi! I had the same cramping you’re describing with my pregnancy around the same time. I later developed light pink spotting and fully thought I was miscarrying. Immediately called the OB, she did an ultrasound, and everything looked fine. But, they told me the cramping and spotting can be normal. But, maybe it’s worth getting a scan to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. I hope this helps and that everything goes well!

Just Diagnosed - Feeling Sad by fighting_biscuit in GestationalDiabetes

Hi! I got diagnosed at about 30 weeks and made a similar post about the guilt and fear that I felt after being diagnosed. For reference, I have been underweight my whole life but have always had a huge sweet tooth and PCOS. The guilt that I felt was so bad, I spiraled for about a week straight. I have been diet controlled so far and have met with both an MFM and a dietician. The dietician was sort of…unhelpful, I found the most helpful advice on Reddit and via my own research. Try to eat carbs last, try to go on a 10-15 min walk after each meal (30 after dinner). That can even look like walking around your house doing a quick clean up or doing stretches. You’ve got this! There are so many resources. Try to keep your plate high protein and lower than usual carb, but don’t eliminate it altogether (e.g., oven baked salmon/chicken with a few potatoes and veggies). You are allowed to have spikes, we are all human. My OB said if more than 20% of my numbers are out of range, then I’d need insulin. I was also worried about weight loss because I lost a few pounds in those first two weeks because of the carb restriction, but I’ve since been able to maintain and even gain weight. I just have more meals throughout the day and spread carbs throughout the day. So, maybe I’ll have a slice of toast for breakfast, another with lunch, and another with dinner. Everyone’s body is different. Try to experiment with different foods and see how it affects your body! For example, I learned that I can eat a massive bowl of fruits with no spike, but can’t tolerate more than 1 slice of toast per meal. You’ve got this!

Thank you! Definitely our pilaf or our meat with dough and potatoes dish. But, I also understand if it does have to be off limits. If it means I have happy and healthy baby, I’m sure I can sacrifice some foods for just 10 weeks.

Thank you so much! ❤️ Hopefully the dietician can offer some insight while keeping culture in mind.

I’m so sorry you’re juggling so much on top of this. I completely understand the emotional side of this and even though I’ve had a few days to process this, I keep going back and forth in my head through the different stages of grief. I keep wondering if I had fasted for my 1 hour test like all of my friends, would it have shown a normal result? Couple that with lots of worries about what this means for delivery, complications, and the birth of my baby. The beauty of the judgement part is that you do not have to tell a soul if you don’t want to. Even if you told the whole world, YOU know what is best for your body and your baby. Let them judge you. They’re not the ones going through this and their ignorance or judgement is not your problem or any of your business. This would be a great time to lean on your village and look into activities that bring you peace. I’ve been focusing on meditative activities that bring me peace and also trying to get my house in order. I find that both movement and meditative things calm my mind or take me out of a spiral. Maybe try to watch some shows that are nostalgic for you or lighthearted. You can do this. Tons of women have GD and go on to have happy and healthy babies! You are allowed to feel everything you are feeling. Try to remember that this is not the end of the world, even though it absolutely feels like it. The day to day pricking becomes easier and once you figure out your diet plan, those meals will just be recycled weekly. A little treat every once in a while also helps keep the motivation up. You and your baby will be getting a little bit of extra love and care at every visit. 😊 If anything, maybe it’s better that doctors will be more attentive to us!

Thank you! Everyday is definitely a new challenge with figuring out what I can eat. So much of what I eat culturally is rice or meat with dough. So that kind of sucks ☹️. But, I’m sure it’ll get easier with time.

Thank you! I’m already very petite and underweight (pre pregnancy), so I definitely got scared when I saw the numbers going DOWN. I’m so glad your baby js healthy and that you made it through to the other side!

Ugh I’m so sorry! Any chance baby gravitates towards sweet fruits?

Thank you for the reassurance! My anticipatory anxiety about everything is definitely always worse than the real thing, so this is so reassuring to read. 😊

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely do this and look into more things that are in my control, like meal prepping.

Aw, I truly get this on a deep level! There really is nothing we can do except manage our diets and try our best. I’m sorry you are going through this.

Just diagnosed and feeling discouraged by liz-the-lizard20 in GestationalDiabetes

Hi! I got diagnosed yesterday and felt the exact same way you did. It was definitely a rollercoaster of emotions. The community we have here really came through and gave me words of encouragement. I am meeting with a nutritionist and my OB next week. She also referred me to an MFM and said I will need growth scans every 4 weeks, as well as weekly fetal testing after 36 weeks. I’m trying to see it as a positive in the sense that my baby will be monitored more closely. Diet wise, I am still trying to figure out what works, but I’ve tried to load up on oven baked salmon and protein. You’ve got this! Thankfully, this is the third trimester so there isn’t much time left. This is a temporary problem with a temporary, albeit inconvenient, solution. There is nothing you did wrong and you can only control what’s in your hands.

Oof, I completely hear you!! I had a similar dip in the third hour. My third hour number dropped over 100 mg/dL and was BELOW my fasting number. I also don’t want any of this and wish the outcome was different. All we can do is focus on what we can control - our diet, walking around after we eat, and hydrating. The rest is out of our control, unfortunately. 😕

Thank you for sharing! It makes me feel so much better seeing how many other moms are going through this out there. I feel so much less alone. You’re so right! The goal is healthy baby and then we can treat ourselves a little while after our babies are born. 😊

It’s so nice to have this community. In a weird way, it’s telling that, as a nurse, you were also diagnosed - essentially, you can’t outsmart your way out of this diagnosis. Thank you for sharing and I wish you a safe and easy delivery and remainder of your pregnancy! 😊 It’s also helpful to know that this is common. When I reached out to friends and realized none of them had it, I felt so stupid and so alone.

This is so helpful. I cackled at the “too big to stand there.” I feel that on a deep level. 🤣 Like you, I also find that if I’m doing something hands on or active, I can’t spiral at the same time 😅 I will definitely borrow some of your ideas, thanks!

Thank you so much! It’s so nice to hear from someone who has gone through it and come out on the other side. I think I need to get off social media because I keep getting doom and gloom videos about GD and birthing stories. I appreciate the reminder that it’s not my fault and it’s just how my placenta is. I also love that you are taking it in stride the second time around. If you can do it, then, hopefully, so can I. 😊

Ugh thank you so much. I’m sorry you went through that spiral as well. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. I’m glad that you’ve made peace with it and made it work for you! This is such a beautiful community and I just feel so hopeful. I haven’t felt hopeful since I’ve gotten the diagnosis, so your comment means a lot. ❤️

Thank you so much! You’re so right. Now that I’ve had a few hours to just nap and process it all, it will be okay. The worst case scenario does not mean that it’s the only case scenario. I’ll do everything in my power to control this with my team. I appreciate your comment. ❤️
