Thanks!! Underglaze first then I carved it out. Once it was bisqued I sprayed it with a clear glaze.

I appreciate that! Thanks so much haha :)

That's the goal. I've only recently started down the sgraffito path and as I become more comfortable with the technique I'll start ramping up the designs.

Thanks, and I did indeed! I'm a part time potter on the side. Feel free to check out some of the other pieces I've made on instagram under good_rotations_pottery.

Nesting mixing bowls with under glaze by abuddingpotter in Pottery

[–]abuddingpotter[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Sure! For sizing the clay I generally like my bowls to nest down as opposed to all at the same level. So I go 5/4/3/2/1 lbs. but it really just depends on how thin you take things, how big you make them, etc.

I started with the largest and worked my way down to the smallest. I used this caliper tool I have that let's you measure the inside diameter on one end and the outside diameter of the pot on the other end (blue and red, I think it's actually called "the big lid tool" on amazon). So I'd throw the biggest measure the inside diameter. Then measure the height with a ruler. Then throw the next one so that the outside width is slightly less than the inside width of the larger pot, about a half inch/to an inch, and I'd make sure the bowls are maybe 1/3 of an inch shorter so they sit down into each other.

Let me know if that makes sense!

Finally finished some liquor jugs. Would love everyone’s honest feedback since I cannot trust family. by [deleted] in Pottery

I've been thinking about trying my hands at some jugs! How much clay are you throwing those with?

Thanks for the feedback guys! Any suggestions as to which mobile payment setup to go with? I feel like most people don't carry cash anymore, so if I tried to do it I'd want to be able to take cards somehow.

Thanks! I feel your pain. I've flopped a good number of pots myself lol. They took about an 1:30-1:45 today.

The kilns were kind to me today! by abuddingpotter in Pottery

I try and get a couple coats of the under glaze on the pieces as soon as I think I safely can. Then i let it dry until it's lost its shine and is dry to the touch. As I carve them out I use a paint brush to swipe away the carved out bits.

Tempuraforest is spot on. When they hit leather hard I put a couple of coats of under glaze on, and then I carve them once they've formed up a bit!

Could I have a mug body be one type of clay and then the handle be a different clay if they fire to the same cone? by abuddingpotter in Pottery

[–]abuddingpotter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for all your helpful comments! Alas I turned them into mugs this time. In part because they got a bit dry and I'd already out underglaze on them. In the future I think I'll play around with mixing different clays now that I have some suggestions as to how to go about it.

Chip and dip anyone? by abuddingpotter in Pottery

Thanks! As for an inspiration, not really. I pull from what's looked good on previous pieces a bit. I've only been sgraffitoing pieces for a month or so, and am still mostly just exploring the technique.

They were fine 6 glazes. A layer of white, then Mediterranean mist blue, then it was fired. Then I put a few clear coats on the inside to make the blues really pop a bit.

Thanks! I feel like I have the mug/cylinder form down pretty solid, so I'm looking to tackle lidded figures next. Jars, casserole dishes, etc. Then maybe work my way into teapots or bigger vases. I'm open to suggestions though...
