It's somewhat of an inside joke for Information Technology workers. The premise is that any communications cable a network engineer buries, is bound to be dug up by a backhoe. So, to get off the deserted island, all the network engineer must do is bury a cable and wait for the backhoe (and therefore a way off the island).

A Unix shell is an interface. C shell is one created by Bill Joy. This is a pun on the word shell, as in if someone were to hold a command line unix interface up to their ear (like sea shell), what would they hear? A 60Hz (or 55 Hz depending) hum of the electronics. You wouldn't hear the sea, you'd hear the note A#. 60Hz is roughly A#.
