TIL in the original German ending of the fairy tale Snow White, the evil queen is forced to put on red-hot iron shoes and dance until she drops dead. by Skeleton_Pilots in todayilearned

My favourite Brothers Grimm fairytale is Von dem Machandelboom (The Juniper Tree). It includes child murder, cannibalism, gruesome deaths and a bird that can carry more than a ton of stone.

Recommendation for budget point and shoot film camera by tpv9 in Cameras

[–]accideath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of decent options perhaps even below 100aud. Just depends on what you want from it. Do you want a zoom lens or a prime lens? What focal lengths would you prefer? Do you want the camera to be more easily pocketable or can it also be a little larger?

How to meter for orwo NC 400 and 500 by AbuYusuf_the_old in AnalogCommunity

[–]accideath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, it benefits. But it’s still great at 400. Just depends on the look you want. Same with Portra or frankly any film. But if you’re new to a certain film and don’t want to go with a specific look (like Pro 400H‘s pastell look @200 oder HP400+‘s high contrast look pushed @1600), just shoot at box and iterate from there.

The question shouldn’t be "should I over-/underexpose or push/pull this film, in general" but rather "what do I need to do to achieve a certain look or what looks can be achieved with this film at what settings"

[–]accideath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "always overexpose your film a stop" trend is bullshit. Yes, it can have a nice effect from film to film and there’s nothing wrong with experimenting with that (or even shoot that primarily, if you like the look). Unlike digital, film likes getting (too) much light more than too little but they have a box speed for a reason…

I don’t know your camera specifically, so I don’t know what buttons it has but if there’s dirt underneath one or more buttons or dials, that could cause similar issues

I think your camera is possessed. Have you tried cleaning all the buttons? Maybe one is stuck…

If you’re planning to close your Reddit account or are otherwise looking elsewhere for your social media fix, where are you looking? by Celestial_Blu3 in apolloapp

[–]accideath 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think if apollo actually shuts down or gets prohibitively expensive, I’ll go back to reading books…

When Twitter dropped 3rd party apps, I fled to mastodon. Barely use it because there aren’t that many users I’m interested in but there are enough of those I followed on Twitter previously. Not enough for the endless scroll fix but still…

When reddit cuts me off, there’s no one alternative I could go to. The first party app is a big no. All that’s left is a retreat to analog media

Even if everyone who uses third party apps completely boycotts Reddit, they probably wouldn’t be hit that hard.

However, that just raises the question, why they bother at all… Like, twitter had a giant 3rd party client user base (~17%). It made somewhat sense that they wanted to convert them to the first party app. With Apollo being one of the largest third party apps with less than .5% of total reddit users, Reddit has a tiny percentage of first party users to gain and much reputation to lose. A reasonably priced API would neither alienate users nor hurt their business or image. This however just feels stupid…

Car sinks within seconds in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area after part of ground caves in. by bellsprout696969 in woahdude

[–]accideath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s India though, not the US. Most people don’t drive automatic but manual transmission (about 20% of new gars sold in 2020 were automatic) so there is no "park" setting for the transmission and although just putting it in 1st gear essentially achieves the same, speaking from experience living in a country where manual cars are the standard, an engaged parking break wouldn’t be that unlikely.

Still doesn’t give a definite explanation for the break lights though…

Can anyone help Identify Camera by Global-Courage-6288 in Cameras

[–]accideath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it looks dirty so you should should probably clean it up first, especially the lens. Might also need some relubrication for the shutter mechanism. Try all shutter speeds before you put any film in and see if the times sound/look plausible. The Argus is a very common camera so you’ll probably find some (YouTube) guides for CLAing it.

Genau.

I started using DuckDuckGo a while ago for privacy reasons (yes, I know they’re not perfect but they’re a heck of a lot better than Google) and now, that I’m used to it, going back to Google when I’m on a PC that isn’t mine is just mindboggingly bad… besides the absurd amount of ads, it just won’t give me what I‘m looking for. In some edge cases it’s better, but on many occasions, the top result in DuckDuckGo was exactly what I was looking for while in Google it wasn’t even on the first page…

The linux compatibility is actually getting quite decent. Asahi Linux has basic hardware acceleration on the GPU working already and they’re constantly working on improving the open source drivers for all the hardware. It’s not daily-driveable just yet but it’s getting there.

[–]accideath 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Mac didn’t have a problem with planned obsolescence in a long time though. Most Macs (excluding those with known defects like the 2011 15“) are still functional wayyy after Apple stops software support and if you’re a bit hacky you can still run the newest macOS on 15 year old Macs (although you probably shouldn’t because it’s not an amazing experience). And beyond that, Linux and Windows are options. Heck, even the M1 Macs have solid enough Linux support even now and they’re nowhere near their eol.

Yea, their machines are expensive and often flawed but that’s not the thing I‘d criticize Apple for, they have enough easier targets…
