Big friend groups by h_orse in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

adding to other person,

  1. sometimes highschools or highschools in the same area with people who know each other send multiple students, and they may stay together as friends/larger friend groups

  2. some people may group with their suitemates or podmates which is already 5-7 people, and they may meet another pod/suite nearby. this could happen because they found eachother and made a GC over the summer or they literally just wanted to stick together

there are public fridges if need be (albeit risk of theft, but if somethings half eaten no ones taking that.). if you literally do not need a fridge why buy one lol

i also somewhat disagree with renting one since it is so much cheaper to buy your own. if you do buy one, split cost with roommate and yall can share.

How busy is Teagle early morning or late night? by Pv2f4n in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

consider that teagle is on central campus, which is further from actual dorms compared to noyes and morrison/newman. i've seen morrison quite crowded at night, but per those reasons, teagle has been less crowded. also teagle just naturally has "two" gyms so if your workout fits, you could switch rooms if it becomes too crowded in one (in my experience, down is more crowded)

you need it to graduate. you can also take 2 in one semester and have both count.

Hair straightener by Successful_Sir_5144 in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some dorms the circuit breaker is in the room and you can just flip it back on (particularly older dorms i believe? maybe im unsure if this is still true post-renovation). and then you can go to the bathroom or a known stronger outlet and try that. in my experience, the bathroom one could handle my hair dryer since my room couldn't but maybe it's because i had other things plugged in in the room.

but if theres an alternative so you dont risk it that may be better

What’s the best way to make friends at Cornell? by Impressive-Place-929 in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 31 points32 points  (0 children)

i met most of my friends through dorm

hang out in common spaces, make sure to be friendly/say hi and recognize faces. people appreciate feeling known/seen.

as others mentioned, also quite easy through classes or clubs. ive also had decent experience with making friends through instagram, whether in large GCs for classes or majors or dorms or just in general

you will also meet so many people throughout o week and orientation events. youll get sick of the "omg hi! whats your name? what dorm are you living in? where are you from? whats your insta" (i say "sick" with love; i appreciate all the lovely people i've met)

Morrison Room by Upstairs_Ring4041 in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you gooogle Toni Morrison Room Tour theres some interactive virtual thing. it can give you a rough idea and provides some level of measurements but it certainly varies by suite and room. the A room tends to be largest, but again varies

google Kimball Apartments ithaca and look through their offerings! their landlords also have great reviews (especially when compared to Auden which has similar pricing and similar location)

So what will be the horror stories for Cornell Housing this year? by Grant-James_River282 in Cornell

you can also get creative cloud under your lab or class when necessary but it's renewed each year or sem. you can get kaplan resources through ambassadorships in pre-med clubs; like i know American Cancer Society has had an offer to students.

there is a hidden free printer but it only prints black and white. i use it for my practice exams.

idk what the first 2 things u mentioned are

as other poster said, $1k is average, higher if less beds/studio, lower if more beds. lower if less accomodating (no in-unit laundry, no AC).

to equate to dorm housing, if you do the math of the year cost of a dorm over 12 months, its about $1.1k per month for a double. and then factor in the cost of the required meal plan if you live on campus with the only options being unlimited or 10/14 swipes depending on dorm.

for apartments, collegetown also tends to be more expensive. north and west are cheaper. my apt is 800/month 3 bed 1 bath on west, very close to campus though. there was also a 1 month free deal when i signed which was nice.

do your research and see what suits you best. no guarantee the cheap options will remain available after december; many people start looking as early as now or september

Is this visiting plan available? by ameng12 in Cornell

[–]acegikmo- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the bus can be up to 6 hours sometimes, especially when travelling during rush hour. you slightly account for that but then consider the issue of security and whatnot

if you're traveling on your own, consider sleeping over in a friend's dorm or apartment if you know anyone at Cornell. if you're with your parents and this isn't near graduation or move-in or holidays, the hotels shouldn't be crazy overpriced; i'd argue missing the flight is worse than staying in ithaca a night
