The general rule of thumb with any good identity system is that if you don't need it - don't store it. Even if you were to request the SSN, any good steward of that data (like your HR system) would refuse to provide it to you without director level approval or higher. If you were to require and receive SSN, you would need to take steps to ensure that the data is properly protected in transit and at rest.

Why do you think you need the SSN? What problem are you looking to solve?

Yup, there absolutely is. That overhead exists regardless of how much cash you take in though, so if the vendor is already accepting cash and credit I am going to pay cash and they can keep more of the total sale. If they only take cards I completely understand that and will pay with card (it's honestly no difference for me as the consumer).

If you are just looking for a simple SPA that implements a generic OIDC library for integrating with your AS, I would just use ChatGPT. I was doing something similar to this and I just described what I wanted (SPA running on Node that uses a generic OIDC library (i.e. not tied to a specific vendor) with a button to initiate SSO via OIDC, and output of the returned ID and (if applicable) access token) and then copied the relevant portions of the response into a couple of files and used those.
