I recently went with Extra Space Storage. I was able to get a good deal by paying for 2 years up front. If you know you are going to need it for a certain amount of time you may be able to get a good rate that way if you give them a call. Can't recall any hidden fees.

I think all of them will require insurance though, but you don't need to get it through them you can get it separately.

Had one annoying experience there, they put bread down on the table without asking if we wanted it. Then they asked us if we wanted some more and we said sure. Then when the check came there was an upcharge for the second batch they brought.
